Hotel 71 is a boutique hotel, located on Wacker Drive, with views of the Chicago River and the famous architecture of the city. The hotel is located directly across the Chicago River from the glossy Trump Tower.
When attending a conference in Chicago recently, I chose Hotel 71 for a night’s stay, partly because the hotel was offering a special price at the time. I was very pleased with the accommodations, the courteous staff and the location.
The hotel is located on Wacker Drive, near the Trump Tower, the Wrigley Building, The House of Blues and the Magnificent Mile of Chicago. The location is central to the City of Chicago for business and recreation.
When I arrived at Hotel 71, I was greeted at the door by a doorman, who greeted me cheerfully and welcomed me to the hotel. It was a good start to a short visit. Upon entry, there was a smallish bar to the right, that led to the hotel restaurant. On the left was a relatively small lobby, with some Art-Deco decor and embellishments.
There was no line and the desk, so I was assisted immediately by the front desk clerk. The reservation had been prepaid, so I was surprised when they wanted to run my debit card for $100 to cover incidental expenses and parking ($35). I explained that I was not parking there, nor eating there, so I was not planning to charge anything to my room, but she still insisted that she needed a deposit, saying that it was standard procedure. In spite of that unpleasant surprise, the check-in went smoothly.
The elevators were just a short walk away from the front desk. There were a few businessmen waiting for the elevator, which arrived within two minutes. The elevator ride was fast and uneventful, whisking me to my room on the 32nd floor. I was near the top, since the hotel is 33 floors high.
My City View room had a view of neighboring towers and architecture, including the Carbine and Carbon Art Deco tower, which now houses the Hard Rock Hotel. The City View room is the least expensive of the rooms available at Hotel 71. On the opposite side of the building is the prime River View Room and the Premier Accommodations,
The room itself was contemporary is style and was clean and comfortable, with a King bed anda small seating area with a ergonomic chair and desk. The was a single serving coffee pot with packages of coffee and some orange scented toiletries from Italy. Wireless Internet was included with the room.
The hotel does not have a swimming pool, but there is a small fitness center. The business center, located on a lower floor, has a view of the Chicago River.
I enjoyed my short stay at Hotel 71. Upon checkout, the front desk clerk reversed the charges on my debit card. The doorman opened the door, greeted me pleasantly, and hailed a taxi.
Hotel 71 is a pleasant place to stay in the City of Chicago. The hotel is located at 71 East Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois.
