Elevate Your Legs
One of the first signs of altitude sickness is a throbbing sensation in your legs. It feels a lot like you are carrying excess weight, which can make walking uncomfortable, even if you are normally a very fit and healthy person. When altitude sickness starts to take effect, blood flow will be constricted from the extremities, including feet and legs. But by elevating your legs, you can start to feel a measure of relief from the symptoms of altitude sickness.
Drink Plenty of Water
Those who are suffering from altitude sickness often feel an overwhelming thirst, as their throat dries out and their lips become chapped. Water can help to alleviate these uncomfortable symptoms, rehydrate your body and replenish lost fluids. Keep a steady supply of water nearby so that you do not suffer the debilitating effects of dehydration. Even though drinking extra water will mean more frequent visits to the toilet, it is a small price to pay when altitude sickness hits.
Get Plenty of Rest
When you are suffering from altitude sickness, you will not feel much like hiking, cycling through the mountains or taking part in other high-intensity activities. This is the time to listen to what your body is telling you and to get the needed rest. Make sure you have a regular sleep pattern and do not make lots of plans while you are still suffering from altitude sickness. Use the first few days of your visit to sleep longer. If you cannot sleep too well during the night, take regular naps throughout the day.
Avoid Vigorous Exercise

Altitude sickness can be controlled with certain medications. However, symptoms will usually disappear on their own, provided you take appropriate steps to care for yourself. Do not push yourself, but give your body time to adjust and you will soon be feeling like your old self again.
