The Greenville/Spartanburg, SC radio market is the 58th largest radio market in the United States, and is the largest market in South Carolina. There are a variety of commercial and non-commercial stations in the market, and I will list them in brief detail below. There is sure to be something for everyone.
His Radio 89.3
His Radio 89.3, WLFJ-FM, is a listerner-supported Contemporary Christian radio station in the Greenville/Spartanburg radio market. The station, which prides itself in being “family friendly”, plays music from artists such as Building 429, Josh Wilson, MercyMe, and Jeremy Camp. There are also some Christian teaching programs on the station, such as In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley. Uplifting messages and Bible passages are heard throughout the day.
92.5 WESC is one of two country music stations in the Greenville/Spartanburg radio market. The station presents a straightforward, music-intensive country format, playing popular current acts such as Luke Bryan, Rascal Flatts, and Dierks Bentley, as well as “all time favorites” from artists such as Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Conway Twitty.
93.3 The Planet
93.3 The Planet, WTPT, is the rock station in Greenville/Spartanburg radio market, playing rock music mainly from the 1980s through today. The station is home to The Rise Guys morning talk show. Artists such as Nirvana, Avenged Sevenfold, Papa Roach, and Pink Floyd can be found on 93.3.
B93.7, WFBC-FM, is the top 40/pop station in the Greenville/Spartanburg radio market. The station is home to Hawk & Tom in the morning, and Ryan Seacrest’s “On Air” in the afternoon from 4pm-7pm. Artists frequently heard on B93.7 include Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and Britney Spears.
Shine 96.7, WROO-FM, is a satellite-based Christian Contemporary station, with a playlist made up of artists such as MercyMe, Jeremy Camp, and Sanctus Real.
Hot 98.1, WHZT, is the rhythmic/Hip Hop station in the Greenville/Spartanburg radio market and plays popular music from artists such as Pitbull, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna. The station features mixshows at night on the weekends. The station is also heard on 94.1 FM in the Spartanburg area.
Magic 98.9, WSPA-FM, is one of two Adult Contemporary/lite rock stations in the Greenville/Spartanburg market. The station, which promotes itself as the “at work station”, plays music from the 1970s through today, from many artists such as Madonna, The Eagles, Kelly Clarkson, Matchbox 20, and Katy Perry. Magic 98.9 plays all-80s music in the 12pm hour every weekday, and plays music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s on Saturday nights. Magic 98.9 carries The John Tesh Radio Show every night (except for Saturday) from 7pm-midnight.
Whistle 100, WSSL-FM, is the second country music station in the Greenville/Spartanburg market. Unlike WESC, who plays more older country music, Whistle plays “hot” country from the 1990s through today. Whistle 100 is home to the popular Ellis & Bradley morning show and promotes “24 in a row” all day long. Artists heard on the station include Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, and Kenny Chesney.
Rock 101, WROQ, is the classic rock station for Greenville/Spartanburg, and plays rock music from the late 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Artists frequently heard include The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rock 101 carrries The John Boy & Billy Big Show from 6am-10am weekdays.
My 102.5 is the second Adult Contemporary radio station in the Greenville/Spartanburg radio market, and is similar to its competitor Magic 98.9 in programming. The station plays music from the 1970s through today, from artists such as Daughtry, Billy Joel, Madonna, Elton John, and Taylor Swift. On the weekends, My 102.5 plays exclusively 70s and 80s music, and airs a Smooth Jazz program on Sunday mornings. The station carries the Delilah After Dark programming on weeknights from 7pm-12am.
News Radio WORD (106.3)
News Radio WORD, heard on 106.3 FM as well as 950 and 1330 AM, is the only news and talk station in the Greenville/Spartanburg market. The station is home to the popular Russ & Lisa morning show from 6-10am weekdays, and carries well-known talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Dave Ramsey. Other programs heard on the station include The Mike Gallagher Show, Coast to Coast AM, and the local Bob McLain show weekday afternoons from 3pm-6pm. The station airs FOX News and local weather at the top and bottom of the hour and has local news during the daytime.
107.3 Jamz, WJMZ, is the only Urban-formatted station in the Greenville/Spartanburg radio market, and broadcasts an Urban Adult Contemporary format, playing a variety of soul and R&B music. Artists frequently heard on Jamz include Jennifer Hudson, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, and Trey Songz.
Other Radio Stations
There are other radio stations in the market, such as WEPR 90.1 FM, the local NPR/SC Public Radio station; 91.5 WTBI, a southern gospel/religious station; Christian Talk 660/92.9, a Christian talk radio station; 94.5 WMUU, an easy listening/religious station; and 103.9 WOLI, a Spanish radio station. There are also radio stations which are receivable in Greenville and/or Spartanburg, but are from other areas, thus they are not considered part of the market.
