www.gohastings.com is a website that sells both new and used video games, movies, music, books, and various electronics. Many gamers have wondered about this site as their prices for used video games are some of the lowest around. For example, the Xbox 360 version of Bulletstorm is currently available used for $18.99. That is much less than GameStop’s $34.99 price tag for a used copy. goHastings also regularly has special promotions which reduces their prices even further.
But sometimes it is a good idea to remember the phrase “you get what you pay for” when shopping online. Is this a good site to buy from or should you stay away?
The first thing you’ll notice at goHastings is that finding games is quick and easy thanks to a wide variety of filtered search options such as price, platform, and by title. One issue with the navigation, however, is that some games have both “used” and “previously viewed” copies available for purchase. It is never really made clear what the difference is between them. “Previously viewed” sounds like something that belongs in the movie section and not the video games section. I stuck with “used” games when placing my order just to be safe.
The real concern with purchasing used video games online is that gamers often have no idea what condition they are actually in. No where on the site does it guarentee that games come in their original case or include an instruction manual. This can be a deal breaker for gamers looking to fill out their collections.
Some people who have shopped at goHastings have also reported their games were not in very good condition. One user on the who frequents the forums on slickdeals.net said that although the disc was okay, his Resistance 2 case “looked like it was chewed by a Chupacabra.” I personally did not have this problem with my recent purchase. Both games were in like new condition. The discs were completely scratch free, the cases had no cracks or marks, and the manuals were crisp and clean. It was clear that whoever traded in these particular games had taken care of them.
Shipping can be a bit of a pain as the cost increases by a few dollars with each game you add to your cart; there is no standard flat fee. That being said, the shipping time is extraordinarily fast. Even with standard shipping, my order arrived within the same week. It should also be mentioned that quantities of most (if not all) games are limited to two of the same game per order.
Overall, I am pleased with gohastings.com and will definitely be buying more used games from them in the future. If you don’t mind the off chance that your game comes in a beaten up case or doesn’t include a manual, you can save a lot of money by shopping here.
