Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” The genius may have been referring to scientific method but this concept applies to your small business too. Your current business plan only carries a certain amount of mileage. After that, you’ll need to hit the gas with new ideas and a solid new plan. To propel over your growth roadblock, take the brakes off by cutting away impediments and exciting your customers and employees.
All some businesses need is to increase the sphere of the company’s influence. Meeting the right people, making the right connections is fundamental to creating new avenues of income. One way to make new connections, and money, is to start consulting. As a consultant, you take on the new role of teacher to newer businesses. Share your wisdom and receive a handsome profit.
Nothing excites a community more than a grand opening. Unfortunately, you only get one. Well, not really. I know many businesses that have annual “grand openings” or celebrations. Note your anniversary in the community with some festivities. Your company is as important to the community as you make it. Celebrations like these do a lot for the morale of your employees too. If your small business is located in a complex or in plaza, involve the surrounding stores in a “community day.”
Review and Release
Now is the time to look at your current operating procedures. Is it time to shake up how invoices are handled or the process of completing a sale? Are there too many steps to troubleshooting customer complaints? Grow your small business with a sleeker, sharper image. Review your company look. Do you need a small facelift?
Upgrade your business with new software. Connect the whole office with a more efficient mail delivery system, product inventory or troubleshooting software. When working with a small budget, even small upgrades like a swanky new coffee pot or fax machine will excite workers. It sounds silly but sometimes employees need positive change to deliver positive results.
Take your business to new places. Get involved in local job and trade fairs. Make appearances on local television giving advice to the community per your special subject. Set up a web store and offer customers the freedom of internet shopping. Be open to innovative new ways to get your business in the bustling, profitable market known as Main Street.
