Between 1964 and 1981 a Thirteenth generation was born. This generation possessed qualities that no other generation in America has had. The successor of the Baby Boomers, Generation X, no longer needs the structural guidance of all the previous generations. Each has a need for individuality. The Gen X’er thrives off challenges. Multitasking is very common and adapting to change is not a problem. A preference of Self-Fulfillment over Job Security has become a known practice and an over the shoulder manager is no longer needed.
If I haven’t grabbed your attention by now then there is no need to continue reading. My goal is to capture the attention of those who realize that many things happen during the lifespan of Generation X. The implementation of Technological enhances greatly impacted Generation X. In comparison to the Baby Boomers, and the Generation Y, the Gen X’ers has experienced the best of both worlds. The Gen X’ers have heard of the stories of struggle and also experienced a time of prosperity. Generation X has been criticized as slackers, whiners and a generation of doom. I think these accusations are and was made due to the different ideologies of both generations.
The Baby Boomers were indeed a successful group of overachievers. I believe the Baby Boomers unconsciously discredited our succeeding group because we were not willing to follow their structure. In all actuality we were able to abstract some of their ideas but also come up with brighter ideas. I think as more and more Baby Boomers retire you will see an uprising of new ideas that has been repressed. No one wants to have their glory taken away and therefore the Baby Boomers being in control of eighty percent of the financial assets had a great advantage over the Generation X that was looking for some way to assimilate. Now the demise of the Baby Boomers is here and they have no other choice but to allow innovation.
Generation X is now in the position to take their rightful place on the throne but you must be ready when it is relinquish. In the past you could obtain a job and achieve anything you put effort and hard work into. In today’s competitive market you must have the credentials that say you have been trained and is able to achieve the results required. We are now competing globally and companies look for the best no matter what nationality you are. Tests have shown that several countries outrank Americans in education. The sciences are being dominated by Asians and many of them are being placed in jobs that Americans once held.
Creativity is awesome but technical abilities are now in demand. Computers are man’s best friend and the dog has become obsolete. A computer better protects its owner by fulfilling its duties quickly and efficiently. They have made his job easier and life is much better for the professional who is well skilled in utilizing all of its functions. Man must be resilient to change and highly flexible as technical advances are made. The person who exemplifies these methods the best will never fall short of duties.
