Gaia (Earth Day Poem)

(Word of warning, cuss words are present at one point. This poem is PG-13)

“Whoa…oh mercy, mercy me. Oh, things ain’t what they used to be, no–no. Where did all the blue skies go? Poison is the wind that blows, from the north and south and east.

Whoa-oh, mercy, mercy me. Oh, things aint what they used to be no–no. Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas, fish full of mercury.

Oh, mercy mercy me. Oh, things ain’t what they used to be no–no. Radiation on the ground and in the sky. Animals and birds who live nearby are dying.

Oh, mercy mercy me. Oh, things ain’t what they… u-uuuuuuuused to be. What about this overcrowded land? How much more abuse from man can she stand?

From Marvin Gaye’s hit song Mercy Me (The Ecology)

I look around and what do I see?

No one cares about the burden they put on on this great land.

They don’t realize the burden they put on their fellow man.

In the past century or so the world’s population has more than tripled.

But man’s use and abuse of nature has increased exponentially.

Nobody gives a fuck about recycling anymore.

Nobody gives a fuck about reducing their carbon footprint anymore.

And it seems nobody does anything but give a fuck now days.

Meanwhile, people are so ignorant to the reality that our way of life can’t be sustained at this pace.

We’re hurting her…

We’re killing her.

Gaia, I’m sorry for all the pain we’ve caused you.

You cried tears every time I threw a perfectly recyclable plastic container away.

You cried tears when I used a plastic bag instead of a re-usable bag.

You cried when we destroy a habitat because we need a new shopping center, need a new McMansion , etc…

You cried tears when you saw the effect it had on an ecosystem.

You cried tears every time there was a needless extinction.

You cry endlessly as we increasing pollute your precious skin, flesh and organs.

I’m sorry I saw the need to fit in by “needing” a car-bon emitter,

Your lungs–choked up many-a-day I’m sure.

I’m sorry I have demanded so much energy, and your polluted your sky.

As you sometimes reply with acid cries.

I’m sorry I required so much food and so much meat.

Helped to deplete your skin of nutrients and so much pain to your mutualistic creations.

And I’m so sorry for ignoring your pain for so long for fear of being criticized.

I know you’re sick right now but be cheerful.

One day you’ll be back to full health and that day will be the best you ever felt.
