Central Alabama’s River Region hosts a variety of events throughout the year to cater to all ages and interests. From concerts to sports and everything in between, the area has a constant flow of activities. During Memorial Day Weekend in 2011, the following events are sure to draw a crowd.
On Friday and Saturday, May 28th-29th, Montgomery will be host to over 200 participants competing for a $13,000 cash prize on the Alabama River at the Toyota U.S. Open of Watercross. The prestigious event will be broadcast on ESPNU and feature events such as the Pro Skip GP, Pro Runabout Open, and Pro Freestyle. The event runs from 10am to 5pm both days and admission is free.
All weekend Montgomery’s Harriott II will be offering riverboat cruises. The Harriott II Dinner Cruise will set sail on Friday, May 27th, from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. Tickets including dinner are $39 per adult and $19 per child. Tickets for the cruise only are $19 per adult and $14 per child. The Saturday Getaway Cruise on The Harriott II will set sail on Saturday, May 28th, from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. The cruise will feature concessions and live entertainment. Tickets are $20 per adult and $15 per child. The Blues Cruise on the Harriott II will set sail on Sunday, May 29th, from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. The cruise will feature concessions and live entertainment. The Montgomery Biscuits Baseball team will be playing three games over the weekend. On Friday and Saturday, May 27th and 28th, games start at 7:05pm and will feature a fireworks show after the game. On Sunday, May 29th, the day is geared towards kids and the game starts at 2:05pm. Bring your children to visit the craft area, see Big Mo, and run the bases after the game. Tickets range from $8 to $12 with children aged 2 and under receiving free admission.
13th Annual “Pro World Olympia & Amateur Capital Classic” Bodybuilding & Figure Championship
If you are looking for entertainment and a way to help a good cause, the 13th Annual “Pro World Olympia & Amateur Capital Classic” Bodybuilding & Figure Championship will benefit the Montgomery Area Food Bank and St. Jude’s Father Purcell Memorial Exceptional Children Center. On Saturday, May 28th, the event will feature two shows at Troy’s Davis Theatre. The morning show will run from 9:00a to 12:00pm and admission is $25. The evening show will run from 6:00pm to 10:00pm and admission is $30.
Overlooking beautiful Lake Martin in Eclectic, Alabama, the Lake Martin Amphitheater will be hosting a Memorial Day weekend concert on Sunday, May 29th at 7:00pm. The show will feature the bands Tonic, Blackberry Smoke, and Trotline. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and children aged 6 and under are free. For more information, visit lmat.org.
For a more hands on and exciting adventure on Memorial Day Weekend, experience the Coosa River in a kayak or canoe. The river features Class I, II, and III rapids along a scenic river coast. Coosa Outdoor Center, located at 172 River Road in Wetumpka, Alabama, is a one stop shop for taking a trip down the Coosa. Groups depart at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm and kayak/canoe rental is $40 for a double-seat kayak or canoe and $25 for a single-seat kayak.
