Friends – The Good, the Bad and the Downright Ugly

“True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost.”

– Charles Caleb Colton

What does friendship mean to you? Is it a few individuals brought together by sharing common interests? Could it be next door neighbors that have more in common than they realize and if they care to find out, turn out to be the best of friends? Is it two total opposites in every way imaginable that just enjoy each others company? Whatever friendship means to you, be glad that you have those friends in your trusted circle, that are always available for a shoulder to cry on and that you can turn to for anything, no questions asked. Good solid friends are hard to discover but will never let you down.

But along the way you will find that some friends will…

“A new friendship is like an unripened fruit – it may become either an orange or a lemon”
– Emma Stacey

You may come across people who seem all too eager to be your ‘friend’ but when it comes to taking on friendship ‘responsibilities’, they run a mile. Other ‘friends’ are there to only get their side of friendship, and not to give friendship in return. Any ‘fiend’ that seems to only want you when ‘they’ want you is not a ‘friend’ at all. To figure out the real ‘friends’ from the fake sometimes may take time, but when done, it will benefit you even if you have lost a couple of so called ‘friends’ along the way.

“Misfortune shows those who are not really friends.”
– Aristotle

If you are wealthy, you can never be sure if your friends really are your friends, or if they are just there for the wealth and gifts. If misfortune hits and some have gone, have a look at who is left around you. If they do not seem fazed, just show concern, then your true friends become apparent. Those are the friends that would give you the shirt off their back and expect nothing in return. Even though your life may no longer be filled with wealth, it is filled with riches.

In life, it is not just your attitude but also your thoughts that attract different people into your life at different times. If you are down, you will find that you attract negative people. These people will not make your life a happy place to be and they will continually bring you down. Just like the ‘Law of Attraction’ says, ‘Like attracts Like’. When you look at the world through happy eyes and you are filled with positive energy, you will once again attract the same type, and this will bring a lot of positive’s into your life.

“It takes a long time to grow an old friend.”
– John Leonard

Some friends you may have known a life time from when you were young, and although life may have taken you in different directions, you know that friend will always be your friend. It doesn’t matter to a true friend if you don’t speak to each other from 1 week – 6 months. True friends come together again as if it was yesterday they last spoke. They don’t care that you have a different job or different life ideas to them, they love you for you, and will never forget you or push you into the background.

“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints in our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.”

– Anonymous

Some friends come into your life for a short period of time, but touch it forever. You may never hear from that friend again in your life, but remember one thing; the people you meet in your life come into it for a reason. So if that friend that has passed through your life has changed it ever so slightly, this is something to be grateful for. You may have needed to meet each other at that time in your lives for a specific purpose. Just because you didn’t realize it at that time, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be thankful that the universe sent that friend to you.

“I can trust my friends. These people force me to examine, encourage me to grow.”
– Cher

When you find true friends, they bring out the best and see you at your worst. They see you when no others would and they know your strengths but look past your weaknesses. Yes, they force you to stand back and sometimes take a long hard look at yourself. A friend is not scared to tell you what they think, be it in fashion choices or in life changing decisions. A true friend will love you regardless of your economy or background – they love you for being the person you are now.

“Friends are the most important ingredient in this recipe of life.”
– Dior Yamasaki

To be friends, it takes a mix of understanding and a whole hell of a lot of respect. The friends you have may be totally different to each other. Sometimes you may have the same close knit group of friends that all love and respect each other. At other times, your friends may not know each other, only know of each other. However your friendship circle exists, whether it be large or small, life has brought each of these individuals together in your life not just to make it better for all involved but to also to show you that whether you are single or attached – you are always going to be loved, and that circle is filled with mutual love and respect and makes it the most positive place in the world.

A true friend will always find a way to love you even when you have done something that u can’t fix.

“Friends are the Family that we choose for ourselves” – Never a truer saying said.

Yes, we meet many friends along the path of life. Appreciate them for all of their different and sometimes absurdly brilliant qualities.
