Former NFL Player Develops Organization in Effort to Help Motivate Central Georgia’s Youth

Central Georgia has had its share of former pro athletes, but there is one from Macon who has decided to come back home and try to make a difference in the community.

Roger Jackson, a graduate of Bibb County’s Central High School and Florida’s Bethune Cookman College, excelled in the classroom and on the football field during the 1970’s and 1980’s.

After spending five years as NFL player-mainly with the Denver Broncos-Jackson spent an additional 13 years as an NFL scout for various teams which included Denver for two years, the Kansas City Chiefs for two years and Minnesota Vikings for nine years.

Jackson’s main focus was football, but now his focus is squarely on how to help today’s youth and his new organization, “Motivating Our Youth”, is designed to tackle the systematic problems that stymie local communities.

The genesis of ‘Motivating Our Youth’ began in early 2009 after the local Board of Education in Bibb County had canceled multiple after-school programs due to budget cuts.

The budget cuts to after school programs were seen to have an adverse impact on Macon and Bibb County, so this motivated Jackson to start his new organization which is based at Macon Housing Authority’s Family Investment Center.

The community responded to Jackson’s new organization and scores of students enrolled in its first year. In its Summer Program, approximately 200 students had enrolled.

The former Tindall Heights resident knows it can be tough growing up and with his background of growing up in a single-parent household led by his mother, he believes there the need for a role model is critical.

Jackson’s organization to be a conduit to help challenge Central Georgia’s youth and play a role in helping to mold and create a positive atmosphere so they can obtain success and have a pathway to adult which his surrounded by opportunity.

The organization emphasizes an old adage: mind, body, soul

As a former athlete, Jackson believes in having a healthy body which means eating the right foods and exercising regularly along with exercising one’s mind through hitting the books.

And when one talks about soul, it is about making the right decisions in life and staying on a positive path.

Jackson’s organization has an after-school program which provides a metaphorical vehicle of opportunities for youth to grow as individual via hands-on tutoring and mentoring sessions (one-on-one or group) which through social and athletic field trips.

‘Motivating Our Youth’ has garnered individual and group sponsorships such as Georgia Power, the National Football League, the Junior League of Macon along with the New Pilgrim and Union Baptist church to just to name a few.
