Whether you have friends or family in Iceland, or are just going there for a getaway, odds are you’ll be flying on Icleandair. Here are some interesting highlights about one of the world’s most intriguing airlines.
A Wide Variety of Depature Cities
Icelandair flies out of a variety of cities from the mainland United States and the world, including Washington D.C., Minneapolis, Toronto, Spain, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Finland, just to name a few. Internationally, flights fly in and out of Keflavik International in Icleand, which was voted the Best Airport in Europe in 2009 as a result of an international passenger’s survey. Constructed by the United States military during World War II, Keflavik was converted for commercial travel shortly after the war’s end.
Much like other major airlines, Icleandair has its own magazine called Icelandair Info. Published by the airline’s marketing department four times a year, the magazine features stories centering on its home country and flights, offering passengers an easy way to pass the time.
In addition to the magazine, Icelandair offers a unique inflight duty free shopping service where customers can purchase luxury goods (such as sweets, jewelry, and perfumes), all at discounted prices.
The country of Iceland is home to numerous volcanos, so when one erupted in 2010, it caused major delays- not only for Icelandair, but for flights around the world. Occurring during what would have been the start of the summer travel season, rescue flights and emergency plans were enacted to help alleviate problems associated with massive delays. Millions of passengers were stranded across the world until air restrictions were lifted when the smoke cleared, which was more than 10 days after the initial eruption.
Icelandair is a major participant and sponsor of the Iceland Airwaves Festival, which can only be described as Woodstock- Iceland style. Boasting a variety of international and regional bands (like The Vaccines, Liturgy and Endless Dark), it is held every October, with artists and visitors heavily utilizing the Icelandair fleet.
For The Kids
Icelandair is especially kind to all children on board, giving each one a complimentary headset, blanket, pillow and even a meal- all free of charge.
