COMMENTARY | The Teen Choice Awards, hosted by Kaley Cuoco of “The Big Bang Theory,” took place Sunday night. Teens were able to vote online to choose their favorites in many categories. It is always a fun night for young celebrities and the fans who love them. I watched the show along with my daughter, as we do every year. These are the three moments that stood out for me the most.
Everyone has been saying Selena Gomez was the “belle of the ball” at the awards last night. However, I happen to disagree. As much as I like Selena, Demi Lovato was the reigning princess. She was in a very dark place in her life a few months ago and has come back stronger and better than ever.
Demi ended up taking home the award for Choice Summer Song for her inspirational hit “Skyscraper.” Demi wrote this song about her struggles and how she was able to work through them while standing tall like a skyscraper. For me, watching her accept the award and knowing what an inspiration she has been for many teens was the big hit of the night.
Harry Potter Hitting Big
It seemed to be a battle between vampires and wizards at the Teen Choice Awards. Most expected “Twilight” to make a big sweep. Although the vampires took home their fair share of awards, Harry Potter came out on top as a surprise of the night. With the end of the movie series this year, it was inevitable.
Emma Watson won over Kristen Stewart for Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actress, which came as somewhat of a surprise to me, but really the big surprise were the winners of the Choice Liplock. Who would have thought Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe would beat out Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson for their on screen kiss? It just goes to show you how much Harry Potter will be missed.
Justin Bieber for Male Hottie?
Maybe it’s because I am a mom of a teen daughter and I just don’t get it. But I was a bit confused on how Justin Bieber beat out both Joe Jonas and Robert Pattinson for Choice Male Hottie. Truthfully, I expected Joe to win that category, but then again, in my home, JB stands for Jonas Brothers. Maybe that makes a difference.
Justin almost had a wardrobe malfunction as he walked up to receive an award. His pants were a bit too loose on him. He has come a long way. He said three years ago he was sitting on his couch watching the awards, and now here he is accepting one. I do respect him for his talent. I guess teens have their own way of looking at things.
