Yes you can create jewelry by finger knitting. These necklaces are soft fiber art you will be anxious to wear, share and enjoy making. If you have used the finger knitting technique before you will be ready to begin these projects as soon as you find your yarn; if you are new to finger knitting you may want to view the tutorials and practice first.
Finger knitting is just what it says creating knit stitches on your fingers using only yarn. A cord of knit stitches forms. The same knit cord may be created using a spool with nails/prongs on top and pulling the cord through the middle of the spool. Both techniques are easy and fast. These links show the directions for finger knitting and spool knitting.
Skeins or scraps of yarn
Knitting spool optional
Autumn or Winter necklace:
For this necklace I used Red Heart medium worsted 0303 Painted Desert, Patons Classic Wool Deep Olive and Patons Classic Wool Grey yarns. Only a small amount of each yarn was used.
Leaving a yarn tail of approximately 15 inches make a 16 inch finger knit cord from each of the three yarn colors. Leave another 15 inch yarn tail on each of the ends of the cords. Tie the completed three cords together with an over-hand knot at the beginning and at the end of the cords. Braid the three lengths of yarn at each end of the cord grouping. Secure the end of the braid with an over-hand knot and trim; make each braid approximately 10 inches long. Tie the braids together or sew jewelry findings to the braid ends for a more finished appearance.
The overall length of the necklace is 16 inches.
Spring or Summer necklace:
The pictured necklace was made using small amounts of Red Heart medium worsted in a medium blue and aqua.
Follow the directions for the Autumn or Winter necklace above. The only difference is that since this necklace has only two cords I finished the necklace by tying over-hand knots with the two yarn strands every inch instead of braiding the yarn ends.
The yarn used will determine the quality of the cord produced: a wool blend, craft or bulky yarn will create a thicker cord with more body while an acrylic yarn will create a much thinner cord with less body.
You may want to attach decorative charms, buttons or other items to the necklace.
These would make great gifts.
