When you think of musicals, you probably think of great classics such as Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, the Sound of Music or Grease. However, there are so many lesser known musicals out there that are well worth watching!
Swing Time – Starring Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Fred plays a professional dancer that signs up for dance lessons, taught by the lovely Ms. Rogers, just so he can be near her. Of course, it doesn’t take her too long to realize he is up to something. Romance sparks between the two, but can their love withstand the conflicts ahead? You will love the musical numbers in here, and Fred and Ginger’s waltz in this movie is my absolute favorite of all their dances.
Girl Crazy – Mickey Rooney portrays a spoiled play boy who is used to the very best. When his father gets fed up with his antics, he sends him to a boys ranch in the middle of nowhere. He is appalled at the thought of no girls, a curfew, and having to touch a horse, but soon the lovely granddaughter of the general arrives, played by Judy Garland. Mickey is smitten at first sight, but will she have him?
You Can’t Take it With You – James Stewart plays a young man who comes from a wealthy, high class family. He falls in love with the girl of his dreams, but her family is slightly more eccentric than his. Will true love prevail? Find out in this hilarious film.
Meet Me in St. Louis – Follow the gripping story of family of five girls and their individual loves, dreams, and heartbreaks. This lovely film features Judy Garland and Margret Sullivan.
Funny Girl – Barbra Striessand’s debut film is absolutely stunning. The music and storyline as she portrays the early career of the legendary Fanny Bryce will keep you captivated. Also starring Omar Sharrif, this is one you’ll want to watch again and again.
In the Good Old Summertime – This is the second film in a trilogy that begins with Shop Around the Corner and ends with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan’s You’ve Got Mail. Judy Garland and Van Johnson play the leads in this musical and bring the familiar charming characters to life.
Shall We Dance – Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers were some of the truly gifted people that can be paired together numerous times, and yet come out with a completely unique outcome in each scenario. Find them again in this fabulous musical comedy.
Presenting Lily Mars – Starring Judy Garland and Van Heflin, this movie portrays the very comic side of Ms. Garland that will keep you laughing from start to finish.
