Emotional Freedom Techniques. Also known as EFT. As the name of this system implies, it can free you from unwanted emotions. So what is it?
EFT is a method of releasing emotions by tapping on various parts of the body. How would that work? Well, EFT was created with Traditional Chinese Medical knowledge in mind. The points that you tap in EFT are important points in TCM along meridians that are very influential to the over-all health of the body. In theory, by bringing up the event or memory that is troubling to you, and then tapping on all the points, you wash the pent-up emotional energy out of your system.
Anyway, regardless of how it works, it seems that it does. Not that it’s the only way to release unwanted emotions, but it is an expedient way.
Here’s the basic routine:
First, you state your “set-up statement” while tapping on your “karate chop” point, so named because it is the part of the hand that most people would strike with using a karate chop. Setting aside the irony of the fact that method “relying on” (aka: taken from) traditional Chinese Medicine would use the name of a Japanese martial art that was taken from the Okinawans who were taught it by the Chinese, you need to know how to create a “set-up statement” to use this properly.
The standard format that has been established for an EFT setup statement is as follows: “Even though I _______, I still love and accept myself completely.” With the usual fill in of “feel this (insert emotion here)”, it’s rather easy to just go by rote at this point, but after you’ve practiced the method a bit, you can and should use your intuition a bit more to come up with more appropriate setup and reminder statements. Another standard form of setup statement, though less used is: “Even though I ______, I chose ________”.
One “Round” of Tapping
After the setup statement, you do one “negative round”. This involves first repeating the first part of the setup statement first, while tapping the point on the eyebrow closest to your nose, then moving onward, and stating similar, related statements while tapping the point outside your eye, then the point underneath your eye, then the point underneath your nose, the point just at the dip above your chin, the inside of your collarbone, and then about four finger-widths beneath your armpit, finally ending at the crown of your head. You should generally tap about seven times at each point, while stating your negative statements, and then you start over from inner eyebrow and do the whole thing again with positive statements.
After you do this, you check to see how “big” your emotion is, and whether or not it’s still the same emotion. Generally speaking, unless the emotion goes away completely after one or two rounds, you’re going to need to do it at least five times to create a permanent affect.
There are other uses for EFT, besides freeing you from oppressive emotions. Those are outside of the scope of this article, but I will say that if you are so willing, you can use EFT in conjunction with Affirmations, in order to force the Affirmation to take a stronger hold within your subconscious.
The Take Away
In order for EFT to give you emotional freedom, you need to use it rather regularly. You’ll need to set aside at least fifteen minutes a day to use tapping to get rid of the emotional roadblocks to success. Basically, you’ll need to work the system for the system to work.
