It is obvious that fast food is unhealthy and can lead to obesity, so why do humans choose to eat at fast food restaurants? America holds the largest amount of fast food restaurants in the world which is one of the reasons that we contain the highest percentile of obese people, along with the advertisements that suck people into eating unhealthy and the way American culture has taught them to eat for years. Advertising, culture, and the speed of getting your food are just a few reasons why Americans love fast food.
The restaurants make the food unhealthy because they must have a way to cook food fast and still be enjoyable; this is why Fried foods are common among these restaurants, being a speedy cooking item. The foods contain high salt, calorie, and sugar levels which are very unhealthy, especially for those with diseases such as a heart illness, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Pregnant woman are warned by doctors to avoid these foods for their health and their child’s. The foods are cooked with hydrogenated oils which increases diseases. More fast food restaurants lead to more obesity, especially when they are around schools, which is a very big marketing scheme for these restaurants. This is why people from age’s 6-19 obesity levels tripled in about 35-40 years.
Many restaurants advertise that new foods are coming out that are healthier than ever before, but the real truth is that most of these advertisements are wrong. A good example of this is McDonald’s yogurt parfait and oatmeal. The parfait was advertised on TV with fresh fruits that looked appealing to audiences and the oatmeal showed the raisins and the fruit as well, but the truth is that both contain very high sugar levels to taste better to customers. There are certain ways to eat better at restaurants and they are not hard to follow and will be rewarding in the end.
One good thing to know is that you should keep a contestant variety of foods. This means have one item from each section in the food triangle. If too much protein or too many starches is eaten it could lead to a large amount of fat and calories entering into your body. You must relies that even though they offer combos so it is easy to order just by saying what number you want, you can still order stuff outside them. For example ask yourself whether you want more fries or more burger or sandwich. If you want more burger or sandwich, order small fries and vice versa. Also ask yourself what objects contain greens and take advantage of them. If you order a salad that is great, but be careful; do not put too much dressing, because this can make it very fattening. You need to pick healthy side dishes and be smart about size portions; don’t continue to stuff your face if it’s not needed. Since fried foods are not recommended, go for grilled and get rid of the useless batter. Also sandwiches are better than burgers.
For dessert I would recommend fruit and yogurt, but as mentioned some of these desserts can have high sugar level. Desserts aren’t necessarily needed in the first place, but if you think you need one choose wisely. Another tip is that if you are very hungry, refrain from eating at buffets. Instead order a large meal or a regular one and save half for later.
There are certain meals and items that should be acknowledged. The healthiest burger at McDonalds is 260 calories and Wendy’s is 280, but a meal at McDonalds can reach up to 1,700 calories. Panera bread is one of the best fast food restaurants because of its fresh foods and fruits and organic cheese and while grains. Einstein’s is also very much like Panera. Atlanta Bread Company offers a Fresca salad which is a good choice.
Many restaurant food types are Mexican, Italian, Asian, and sub shops and each of these contain certain things which should be ordered in order to stay healthy. The best Mexican options would be shrimp enchilada, Veggie or bean quesadillas, black bean and grilled foods. When eating Italian food try to order thin crust pizza, plain rolls, grilled food, and veggies with pasta. Smart choices at Asian restaurants are egg drop soup, miso, wonton, hot and sour soup, stir fry, steamed rice, broiled foods, low sodium foods, and no fried rice. When you go to a sub shop like subway try to get 6 inch sandwiches rather than foot long ones. Also low fat dressings, extra veggies, and lean meat, less cheese and whole-grain things would be smart Quiznos is a unhealthy choice for a sub shop because of their high amounts of protein.
Advertisements have sucked people into eating at fast food restaurants for years. Quotes on advertisements are a big business scheme. McDonalds have mastered this by saying “Make your buck go further”, advertising their dollar menu. Restaurants are known to target children especially. It is a proven fact that many children recognize a McDonald’s sign before they can even speak. Toys are often a number one way to get children to eat at fast food restaurants. If the child wants to eat at a place for their food then it makes the entire family go to the same place as well. People have been known to collect toys from places from when they were children and some are even worth descent money. Stations such like nickelodeon make major bucks off advertising fast food restaurants. Thankfully, Stations like the public broadcasting have made their commercials kid-friendly, eliminating fast food commercials. TV and radio needs to be regulated so that children to not get stuck into eating badly for the rest of their lives.
Human beings need to realize that there are other choices than what is given to them. In many cases children are fed fast food by their parents and they feel like it is logical to eat it consistently for the rest of their lives. If they were told that they could eat other good foods while at the same time be healthy, the obesity level would decrease. Also if the government wanted to help the people they could establish a group of people that went to fast food restaurants and regulated what they served. Regulations should be placed on fast food restaurant’s setting a calorie limit for meals. Portion sizes should also be regulated as well.
People have a choice to eat what they want, but when they don’t know there are other choices they just eat what is on every street corner. The fact that fast food is available wherever you are makes people feel like it is a good thing. There are over 160,000 fast food restaurants available to Americans, which in turn feeds over 50 million people a day (http://www.numberof.net/number-of-fast-food-restaurants-in-america/). When one restaurant opens on a busy road and has good business, other companies will see this. They will immediately open right next to each other until there is around ten or more on one road. The more restaurants opened means more unhealthy food for the people of that town.
An interesting thing that just hit the fast food market is the 50 nuggets you can now buy. It’s available at McDonald’s and is known to people as the “50 nugget challenge”. I have heard numerous teenagers challenging their friends to eating them for lunch. This ‘challenge’ has made eating the nuggets a cool thing to some people. They find it funny and entertaining to take this challenge, but the truth is it’s disgusting. The price is very good, 10 dollars, but the truth is bad. It is ok if I athletic team is splitting them, but for one or two people, its simply too much. For each chicken nugget there is about 40. This being said for 50 that’s a total of 2000 calories. When People from different countries think of Americans them immediately think of our obesity. We have many positive things in our history for us to feel good about, but the obesity level is a stereotype that reflects us negatively. If food was regulated and weight was loss as a whole, then our country would feel better and be looked at better as well.
An argument that people may have to defend fast food restaurants is that it creates jobs. Many jobs are given to people for serving and cooking food. Although the pay is low, it gets many people off the street. This is a positive factor, but a compromise would be to regulate the foods more and keep the workers’ jobs. The fact that jobs are created makes me believe that these restaurants should not be closed, but still need to be regulated.
A subject that many people argue about is how hard or easy it is to open fast food restaurants. To open one you need to get a business loan and then contact the business in which you want to open and ask them for an application. In many cases it isn’t hard to open a fast food restaurant, but McDonald is a hard restaurant to open. In average it will cost from 506,000 to 1,600,000 dollars to open one. You will be required to pay a 12.5% of all royalties, as well as a 45,000 dollar franchise fee (http://www.ehow.com/how_2073634_open-mcdonalds-franchise.html). The waiting list for a McDonald’s has been said to be very long. The reason that McDonalds is so hard to open is because it is the leading fast food restaurant in America. If you don’t have enough money to open one of the leading fast food restaurants then you could open a lower one. The reason this is so important is because anyone could open a restaurant as long as they have money, making more and more available for Americans to eat.
As years go by Americans need to realize that more of these unhealthy restaurants are going to open. Everywhere they drive or walk their will be one available, running the healthier restaurant’s out of business and destroying the diets of humans. My advice is to cook at home, because no matter how hard you try to eat healthy at these places you will always gain more calories than expected. Better diets give humans a better and healthier lifestyle with more opportunities.
