ESL and ELD students always appreciate learning vocabulary that they can see and use right away. They will see these Earth Day vocabulary words throughout the community, at stores, in advertisements, and on the news.
Not all of these vocabulary words need to be assigned for memorization, but having them all on one page provides a good reference for your students to keep in their notebooks.

Fill In the Blank
As a vocabulary practice activity, write sentences that are missing a word and let your students use their list to determine what word best fills in the blank. Sample sentences using Easter vocabulary include:

“Reduce, ____, Recycle is a popular Earth Day slogan.
Cloze paragraphs are paragraphs with words and phrases missing that students fill in on their own. An example of a cloze paragraph using Earth Day vocabulary is:
To recycle, we collect ____, ____, and ____ and take them to the nearest recycling center. By recycling, we keep many items out of the ____.
Writing Assignments and Journal Activities
Give your students plenty of practice using their new words in the journals and other writing assignments. Some journal topics for Earth Day vocabulary include:
Do you think Earth Day is important? Why or why not?
Does your family recycle? Why or why not?
What is one thing you can do on Earth Day to help the planet.
