The Cricket World Cup 2011 live streaming has already broken records. But today’s live streaming should bring the cricket championship to even greater heights. For that matter, TV ratings are expected to be massive as well, especially since India is involved. Although this morning’s India-Sri Lanka championship may be less hyped than the India-Pakistan semifinal, there’s no reason to expect it will be that much less of an event.
Although it is hard for Americans to tune in, much of the rest of the world is filling the gap. According to SiFy, the first 40 matches generated a combined 162 million viewers. But that total was counted before the record setting semi final match on Wednesday, between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.
67.3 million people reportedly watched the game in India alone due to the high stakes and bitter rivalry between the countries. But the Indians already proved their intensity beforehand, as they drove earlier matches to record ratings – on TV and on the Internet.
Live streaming for the Cricket World Cup is being hosted on ESPN Star, which has reaped the benefits. The first 40 matches generated 55 million views for the website, with 10.7 million views alone for matches featuring India. Therefore, it is fortunate for them, and for other TV networks, that they are playing in today’s final.
Although Australia has won three championships in a row, they haven’t attracted these kinds of numbers before. It has been a perfect storm for the Indians, since they co-host the tournament, got to beat Pakistan, and are now playing for the title in Mumbai.
Of course, they will feel let down if they actually lose to Sri Lanka this morning. But no matter what, TV networks like Star Sports and Star Cricket, and sites like ESPN Star, are already guaranteed to be big winners. This reflects just how fanatical the world is about the sport, even if America hasn’t caught on – yet American fans have ESPN Star to help them catch the action online, and live coverage from Yahoo as well.
It is an added bonus that the actual matches have been gripping as well. Australia’s long time reign finally ended, which instantly opened up more drama and suspense. England’s first round matches constantly went to the wire, and one of the biggest rivalries in the world was renewed in the semi finals.
Millions around the world are likely hoping the India-Sri Lanka final isn’t an anticlimactic ending. But they are all huddled around their TVs to find out, or using live streaming to check World Cup for the last time.
