Community Farmers Markets

As spring is before us, flowers are blooming, fruits and vegetables are growing and there is sunshine all around. Maintaining a healthy life starts with maintaining a consistent diet of fresh foods. This article will showcase three popular Farmers Markets serving the residents of West Adams and the Crenshaw community of Los Angeles. The basic theme is a commitment to insuring residents have access to a wide variety of fresh and nutritious products at an affordable price.

FAME Fresh Produce

“When you mention urban people tend to think of food deserts or areas where fresh produce is not available,” mentioned FAME Health Coordinator Heather Hays. “As the oldest African-American church in Los Angeles, First African Methodist Espicopal church (First A.M.E.) uses the FAME fresh Produce market as an extension of our ministry,” Hays continued.

The market is located on the corner of Western Avenue & Adams Blvd. and open weekends from 9:00 to 4pm and offers fresh fruits and vegetables, and on occasions will feature various vendors offering artisan type products. The vibe of the market and to make your shopping experience more pleasant is master D.J. Glenn spinning a wide variety of music.

Crenshaw Farmers Market

Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza

Formerly the Leimert Park Farmers Market, relocated and transformed as the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Farmers Market while redefining its commitment to the community, the market has picked up tremendous popularity and from the smells of hickory smoked bar-b-que to fresh artisan crafted breads, the offerings of fresh produce make this a must stop for those in the Crenshaw community.

The market is staged on the southwest section of the mall, adjacent Wells Fargo Bank. They are open Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm

St. Agnes Catholic Church Farmers Market

St. Agnes boast the oldest Farmers Market in the community, as every Wednesday a parade of vendors make their way to the church parking lot located on Adams Blvd. and Vermont Avenue and by 10:00am the place is abuzz with regulars and those shopping for the freshest produce around. The place is known for its true “farmers market” appeal as while it is very organized, it offers a very homey environment for those who wouldn’t dare think of going to a supermarket.
