Having been a professional Organizer for around 12 years now, I have seen my share of closet monsters. I have devised 5 simple steps to help eliminate closet clutter without leaving you feeling overwhelmed and anxious in the process. The keys to successful organizing are patience, persistence and discipline. Following them will make your journey a lot easier.
Step 1 Reasonable Goal:
The first thing you need to do when planning any kind of organizing task is to set a reasonable goal and time frame to complete it. This will help serve as a guideline of what you should expect from yourself during the whole process. It is important to make sure that you are able to commit to your goal, even if your time frame allows you to work only 20 minutes every Saturday on your project. The goal is not how fast you complete the job but that you just complete it.
Step 2 Declutter Demolition:
Once your goals are set you can now begin declutter demolition! Start by taking everything out of your closet and dividing it into three piles.
Pile 1: Charity/Donations
Pile 2: Yard Sale/Consignment Shop and
Pile 3: Keep.
Anything that does not fit into these three piles needs to be tossed out.
Organizing Tip: When sorting through your clothes the rule of thumb is whatever you have not worn in over a year should be put into one of the three piles, hint, it is not pile number 3.
Step 3 Visualize:
Now that you know what is staying and what is going you can step back and examine your closet to see how you want the new closet to look and function for you, you can even sketch it out if need be. For example, do you currently have enough space to keep all wardrobe seasons in the same closet or will you need to get some organizing equipment such as totes and bins for storage? Will you being need to purchase shoe organizers or organizing hangers to create more space or will custom made pieces need to be added. Once this is established you can then start the next process.
Step 4 Operation Put Back:
Once you have all the equipment needed you can now begin operation “put back.” Simply start putting all your keep items neatly and orderly back into your closet. Make sure you stay on track and don’t give up until your closet is finished. If you have to tweak your original goal a little during the process that is completely fine as long as you stay with it. You will be surprised how much easier life will be when you are organized.
Step 5 Party:
Congratulations! You’ve just achieved an amazing accomplishment and should be very proud of yourself. You are now one closet closer to an organized home and life. Check out more tips and advise on my website lifemoreorganized.org. Happy Organizing to all!
