The Venue

Located in the St. James Hotel on Soi 26, they are within walking distance of the Phrom Phong BTS station. The restaurant is situated in the lobby of the hotel and it has an open floor plan with both inside and outside dining by the pool. The color scheme is a playful nod to the name of the restaurant and is dominated by the colors of citrus fruit and boasts bright hues of orange, yellow, and lime green. The d©cor is accented with deep magentas and browns and is tastefully done. There is also a soothing waterfall feature that can be viewed from the dining room that adds a nice and relaxing feel to the place.

The Food

The Citrus Bar & Restaurant has a full A La Carte menu with both Thai and European dishes, with most dishes priced under $9.92USD (300 Baht). However, if it is value for your money that you seek, then you have to try the buffet. It is available Monday-Friday between the hours of 1130-1430 for only $9.59USD (290Baht++). The Citrus Bar & Restaurant also has a promotion on the buffet where you buy 3 buffets and get 1 free. But great prices alone are not necessarily enough reason to visit a restaurant; it really is all about the food. When it comes to this buffet, they mostly deliver.

The buffet was fairly small, but the quality was above average. There was a wonderful salad bar with a nice selection of different lettuces and salad dressings like balsamic vinaigrette and Caesar dressing. There was also a good selection of fresh fruits and salad toppings including good quality parmesan cheese and not so good quality bacon bits. The sushi and the goyza on the buffet was also pretty good and it additionally featured cold cuts and cheese for making sandwiches with the dinner rolls that were available. Once again, the deli meats were not superior in quality and the cheese was processed, but they were all right for what you pay. What was exceptional was the Papaya Salad which is always made fresh to order. It was bright, bold and wonderful. The buffet had rice, potatoes, several stir-fries, hot dishes, vegetable dishes, cold dishes, soups and desserts were available. Favorites included the Seafood in Curry Sauce, The Roast Beef in Red Wine Sauce, the Crispy Pork and Vegetable Stir Fry and the Beef with Green Curry. The Pork Cordon Blue was not particularly a highlight because it did not remain crispy on the outside and it was a bit dry. But the Seafood in Curry Sauce was fantastic and as good as any ever tried with just the right among of spiciness and overall seasoning. The Pumpkin Soup with Cream was also delightful. The soup was surprisingly light, with a slight sweetness to it. Another hit was the Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese frosting and the Chocolate Cake. Both were extremely moist and delicious and make you delight in the fact you can go back and have as many pieces as you like.

The Verdict

The quality of the food at the buffet at Citrus Bar & Restaurant is very good when you look at all that you get and how little you pay. Everything tasted was good, and some items were exceptional, which was a bit surprising. It’s not a really big buffet, but what they offer is thoughtful and executed well. If you couple the taste of the food, with the good service provided by the friendly staff and the exceptional price of the buffet, it becomes very easy to recommend the buffet at Citrus Bar & restaurant.
