In Jeremiah 3:1-5 God told the Israelites, “If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers- would you now return to me?” declares the Lord. “Look up to the barren heights and see. Is there any place where you have not been ravished? By the roadside you sat waiting for lovers, sat like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled the land with your prostitution and wickedness. Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen. Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame. Have you not just called to me: ‘My Father, my friend from my youth, will you always be angry? Will your wrath continue forever?’ This is how you talk, but you do all the evil you can.”
So many people today do many of the same things that the Israelites did back during those days. God warned them about worshiping false gods & idols, about continuously committing one sin after another, and about being disobedient to His word. Yet the Israelites continued to live as if they were not children of God. We see this time and time again throughout the Bible, and yet many people today seem to live in the same manner as the Israelites did. And there are countless people who claim to be Christians that are just as guilty of these things as non-Christians and atheists.
People today idolize athletes, singers, actors, money, material possessions, etc. They will tell a lie one moment, then praise God the next. They will curse in church, and then shout “Hallelujah.” They will commit adultery, and then talk about how they just want to live for God. People will commit crimes, do drugs, drink alcohol, have pre-marital sex, dress inappropriately, bring other people down, damage other people’s self-esteem, be promiscuous, stab each other in the back, abuse others physically, mentally, emotionally and sexually, behave immorally, do things illegally, try to get ahead dishonestly, and gain things illicitly. And some will do this while lifting “holy hands” and claiming to be Christians.
Worse still, many people who claim to be Christians won’t read the Bible, won’t repent of their sins, won’t live according to the Fruit of the Spirit, won’t worship God, won’t go to church regularly, won’t support their church financially, won’t give of their time, won’t help the poor, won’t help their neighbor, won’t support their families, and won’t raise their children properly. Then these same people will turn right around and expect God to bless them with whatever it is that they want. They will pray to God when they want something from Him, but won’t pray to Him to say thank you once they receive it. They will constantly ask God for more & more material things, but refuse to be satisfied with all that God has already provided them. They will tell God how He should work in their lives, instead of seeking God’s will and purpose for their lives. They will treat God as if He is their servant, instead of realizing that they are to be His servant. They will come to God with the ignorance of arrogance, instead of humbling themselves in His holy presence. They will believe that they have earned the right to benefit from God’s grace, instead of understanding that they have truly been provided with the privilege and honor of God’s mercy. They will turn a blind eye, deaf ear, reckless tongue, hardened heart, and unrighteous spirit toward God, all the while expecting Him to fulfill their every need, every want, every hope, every dream, every desire, and every aspiration.
As a whole, society today works as if God does not exist. We see nothing but racism, classism, sexism, misogyny, homelessness, modern-day slavery, ethnic cleansing, catastrophic wars, under-funded school systems with over-worked teachers, the disenfranchisement of ethnic minorities, a disappearing of the middle-class, and the removal of God from schools, television, books, and even sometimes from certain churches (or those that claim to be churches). And this country has the nerve to say “God bless America.” Why should God bless America? What has America done to bless God?
We need to stop living as if God doesn’t exist. We need to stop prostituting our faith. We need to stop demeaning, demoralizing and debasing God. True Christians need to stand up and fight for our God. We need to stand up and fight for our faith. We need to stand up and fight for what is good, righteous and holy. We need to stand up and bring the light of God back into our lives and back into this dark world. We need to pray to Him, seek Him, thank Him, worship Him, praise Him, glorify Him, magnify Him, love Him, adore Him, bless Him and most importantly, we need to be still and know that He alone is God. Amen.
