Chicago Public School Bans Homemade Lunches

In this day and age when schools are constantly complaining that they don’t have enough money, you would think that they would be encouraging parents to “brown bag” their children’s food to help cut down the costs of providing school meals.

One government school in Chicago, however, has found a way to increase their income by doing the exact opposite.

The “Little Village Academy” school has forbidden students from bringing in their own lunches. They must purchase their food at the school cafeteria, or don’t eat at all.

Elsa Carmon, the principal of the school, explained her reason for the decision:

“Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school. It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve. It’s about milk versus coke.”

Indeed, the food is of such “excellent quality”, that the kids are tossing the food in the garbage right after they buy it. A reporter has observed that kids have been stopping at the local 7-Eleven to purchase junk food and hiding it in their pockets before arriving at the school, either to eat it themselves, or sell to the other kids.

Oh well, I guess it’s not all bad… at least the kids are learning about commerce and the black market.

I refuse to believe that this is all about “nutrition”… it’s more about creating revenue by, for lack of a better term, “cornering the market” in a commodity. Either Principal Carmon thinks we’re stupid, or she’s incredibly naïve.

No surprises here, this is Chicago, after all. What else can we expect from a city that spawned political thugs such as the likes of Rod Blagojevich, Rahm Emanuel and our current president, Barrack Obama?

I’m no nutritionist, but I’m going to take an educated guess as to the real reason kids today are overweight.

It’s not the junk food, folks. Junk food has been served to kids for decades, in schools (pizza day, chocolate milk and desserts come to mind), in fast food joints and at home. You didn’t see a lot of fat kids in my days of school. So why has junk food suddenly now become a problem?

The real reason for so many kids being overweight is the lack of physical exercise. I don’t know if the “Little Village Academy” canceled their P.E. classes, recesses or both, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they did.

As kids, any food we consumed was burned off by activity in the school gym, or on the playground, playing games like dodge ball, tag, hide and seek and “cops and robbers”… remember playing those games, before they became “verboten” by the government schools?

Now they either sit in class all day except to eat, and when they get home, the only games they play are whatever comes with a controller and a video screen.

Will the parents of these kids raise enough of a fuss to get the new rule reversed? It’s tough to say. Plenty of parents have expressed their anger, but then again, these are the same people that continue to vote for politicians such as the ones mentioned earlier.

We’ll find out soon enough, that is, if the story doesn’t simply just vanish when the media loses interest in it.
