COMMENTARY | Upon the 40th anniversary of his conviction for the murder of actress Sharon Tate, among other people, Charles Manson broke a 20-year silence and, in a phone interview from prison, revealed a new obsession of his-global warming.
“‘Everyone’s God and if we don’t wake up to that there’s going to be no weather because our polar caps are melting because we’re doing bad things to the atmosphere.’
“‘If we don’t change that as rapidly as I’m speaking to you now, if we don’t put the green back on the planet and put the trees back that we’ve butchered, if we don’t go to war against the problem…’ he added, trailing off.”
Manson, for those who don’t recall history before the election of Barack Obama, was an insane sociopath who had started a communal “family” consisting of himself and mainly deluded young women whose main activities were panhandling, drugs, and sex.
However, in early 1969, Manson somehow acquired the notion that a race war between blacks and whites was inevitable and decided to give it a spark by invading homes in the Los Angeles area and murdering everyone there, the idea that the massacres would be blamed on blacks, causing retaliation, and a worldwide apocalypse at the end of which the “Family” would rule the world. Manson claimed to have been inspired by the Beatles song “Helter Skelter.”
The Manson family committed a pair of home invasions, killing everyone they found, including the pregnant Sharon Tate, wife of film director Roman Polanski. The subsequent police investigation resulted in the arrest of Manson and his “Family” members and convictions in one of the most celebrated and notorious trials in American history. Manson was sentenced to death, which was commuted to life after the California Supreme Court abolished the death penalty in that state.
All of this leaves us with the spectacle of one of the most insane killers in history jumping onto the global warming bandwagon. One supposes that Manson is attracted to the apocalyptic aspects of the belief. 40-odd years ago he wanted to destroy the world by starting a race war. Now he is worried that the world will be destroyed by global warming. Both beliefs seem to be equally crazy.
