Casey Anthony: Psychopath or Sociopath?

No doubt you have at the very least heard of the Casey Anthony trial which is currently being broadcast daily on television. A story about a mother accused of murdering her two year old daughter so that she can live “the beautiful life.” Casey is on trial after pathologically lying about most everything to do with her daughter’s disappearance. If convicted, she could face the death penalty.

My best guess about why this case has been so popular in the media since the news was broken in 2008 is due to the unbelievable circumstances surrounding the facts. Casey Anthony waited 31 days to contact police about her missing daughter and only did so after her mother found her and called the police. Had she not been found by her mother, it looked unlikely that Casey Anthony would have contacted the police at all.

How can a mother intentionally fail to report her child missing for over a month and in the meantime go out partying, entering wet t-shirt contests and show no emotion to any friends or family? Is there more going on here than her pathological lying? Is Casey Anthony a psychopath or a sociopath?

According to dictionary.com, the definitions of psychopath and sociopath are below:

psychopath- A person afflicted with a personality disorder characterized by a tendency to commit antisocial and sometimes violent acts and a failure to feel guilt with such acts.

sociopath- A person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behavior is antisocial and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or moral conscience.

They both sound similar in meaning, right? So what does this mean? Is this kind of personality disorder a valid defense? Not necessarily. Just because you may have a personality disorder and an impulse to do or not do something does not mean that you do not know the difference between right and wrong. If this had affected Casey Anthony’s determination of right or wrong she wouldn’t have failed to report her daughter missing.

However, her lack of emotional expression based on testimony by her parents and friends shows a strong inclination that she is indeed a sociopath. If you are watching the trial, you can see jail tapes of Casey Anthony and the way she makes statements. Most everything is about her, her life being taken from her and her life is ruined. This woman was the mother of a beautiful baby girl and all she can think about is her life being inconvenienced? Remember also that these tapes were made back in 2008 at the time surrounding the crime.

It is my opinion that Casey Anthony is definitely a sociopath, if not a psychopath and if released she could go on to commit other crimes. She shows absolutely no remorse for anything that she’s done and has even deemed it okay to allow her defense to be that her own father sexually abused her. She knows no limits to sacrificing those around her to get what she wants.
