In recent years organic and natural foods have become much more commonplace, with even traditional grocery stores having selected offerings or even a department devoted to these foods. Even better news is that organic and natural food stores are becoming more common. Here on the north side of Indianapolis we now have several options to choose from, so let’s review the top picks so you can choose what works best for you.
Traditional Grocery Replacement Option: Whole Foods
Locations- On 86th street between College and Westfield Blvd OR in Carmel at the Clay Terrace Mall
Highlights- large chain-store with lots of variety, carries selection of local produce and prepared foods
Whole Foods is a large retail chain with over 300 stores in North America, so just like any other large retailer you can expect lots of variety. They have large produce sections and work closely with local organic growers to bring in as much local produce as possible. I was even surprised to see that their beer and wine section contains local wines from places like Oliver and Easley Wineries. Whole Foods has their own private label brand for many staple grocery items that tend to be less costly, which means better overall shopping value. They even have a large selection of natural beauty products, the likes of which I have not seen rivaled at any other brick and mortar retailer. They also have a large deli with many prepared food options that offers daily specials for lunch or dinner. You could theoretically do all of your weekly shopping at Whole Foods since they are a full service grocery store.
Have Organic Delivered Option: Green B.E.A.N. Delivery
Location: Wherever you are in Indy! They deliver to your home or office.
Highlights: Delivery of local and sustainably raised produce and meat, poultry and more
Serving both Indianapolis and Cincinnati, Green B.E.A.N. Delivery has created a network that brings local produce, meats, poultry, and prepared foods to consumers. It’s kind of like having a farm market delivered to your door. They have offerings from farmers all over Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois and do source out farther for organic and natural food products not readily available in this area. Deliveries are done weekly, with a pre-set bin of produce that IS customizable so you can get what you need. Customization is done online through their website and you can also add as many extras as you want including: grass feed beef selections, vegetarian raised poultry and eggs, prepared foods from their Farm to Kitchen line, and Trader’s Point Creamery dairy products. If you want to support local agriculture and businesses this is a very convenient way to do so.
New Customers Tip: You will need to sign up in advance and it may take a week to get into their system for deliveries.
Organic Dairy and Farmer’s Market Option: Trader’s Point Creamery
Location: 9101 Moore Road in Zionsville, products also available at many local grocery stores
Highlights: Organic, grass-fed dairy products, weekly farmer’s market, and The Loft Restaurant
For those of you that prefer the community interaction of a farmer’s market, Trader’s Point Creamery is a great place to visit. Their store and The Loft restaurant is open at the Farm in Zionzville daily 9a-6p, but for the best options you’ll want to hit the farmer’s market they host. The Winter Green Market is hosted every Sat, November through April, 9a-12p and the Summer Green Market is open every Friday, May – October, from 4p-8p. Don’t forget to try an ice cream cone while you’re there!
These are my top picks for North Indy, but there are plenty of other options depending on your needs or location. Here are a few others you may want to check out:
Locations: 146th Street in Carmel and 54th and College in Broad Ripple
Highlights: Great selection of produce, specialty meats, and prepared foods in an elegant shopping environment. While you want get your whole shopping trip done here this store is great for getting specialty items you may not find elsewhere.
Location: 6350 Guilford Avenue in Broad Ripple
Highlights: This is a great place to supplement your organic grocery shopping for supplements, green cleaning products, supplements, and body care, and foods for vegetarian and gluten-free diets. One of the few stores in the area that carries seeds for the sprouters out there.
Location: 4375 Georgetown Road on Indy’s west-side
Highlights: For shoppers further to the west-side, Georgetown Market is a convenient stop. On top of their nice variety of organic and natural foods, they also have their Market Eatery on-site which offers, in their words, “Indy’s only fresh, organic juice bar”, featuring wheatgrass shots, smoothies, sandwiches, salads, hot bar and more.
