Canon 70 – 300mm Lens : Elite League?

Canon ER 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

A 70-300mm lens is always found in true photography enthusiasts bag, it adds in to the regular kit and prime lens in use. The latest release from Canon is a high priced version of 70-300mm lens. It comes with better optics and super silent motor for focus, also the L series version indicates professional features to be embedded.

The lens comes with ultra-low dispersion elements which keeps out chromatic aberration to the least. The lens comes with fluorine coating which does keep the finger prints and minor dusts off. Which does help the cleaning of lens better. The Ultra sonic motor is silent and the lens comes with a lens hood and carry case. The drawback for this pack is the missing tripod collar.

The lens has high end features which include a metal body, weather shield preventing water and dust off the lens. There might be trouble with using focus on the lens, as opposed to the most common lenses the focusing and zoom rings are swapped. It is said to have 150 degree rotation on zoom which helps in keeping the zoom to the most accurate position.

To the good part of the lens, the focusing and IS is an added advantage which does help in low light shots. But for the cost of lens one will expect the aperture value to be more wide open than a f4. The images are sharp and the low chromatic aberration feature counts for it. The focus is fast and accurate so that does help.

Canon has discontinued the non-L version of 70-300mm, so the canon users will be forced to either use the non IS version which costs around 11000 rupees or $250 (approx) or try the latest lens which costs around 1Lakh rupees or $2250. Which will be good if you have a 5D markII or similar high end models. For other users it will always be good if they go for other brands compatible with Canon.

Lens is great for its optics and build. The autofocus and zoom rings are accurate and fast. The lens comes with IS feature which does gives in the added advantage in low light. Although the lens is costly and misses the wide aperture option as in 70-200mm f2.8. So My personal recommendation will be the 70-200mm or if you are particular you can use Tamron or Sigma versions for Canon.
