We conducted an extensive research before we started our online contents writing journey. The feedbacks we have received has been a variable outcome ‘” but we have learnt from several Canadian writers for instance, which were able to generate as much as $40,000 a month; that was really on the top end.
For most writers; the earnings can range anywhere between $200 to $5,000 a month. There are a large number of writers achieving $2,000 to $5,000 range; which is not a bad monthly income; in fact, it is probably better than many jobs.
How can the difference be so much, is it because the websites they contribute or is it their business model?
Not just a writing game: That is a reason why many writers do not do well, they can write good articles, but they can’t promote them online, hence not able to achieve traffic.
It’s really a numbers game: Yes, it is a numbers game ‘” at the end of the day, your success is based on the readership / traffic. You can do this in 2 ways: First, you are really an expert in your field; and your articles are 2nd to none. Whenever people want to know something about a topic, they remember you straight-away. This has been a very successful strategy for a number of medical writers.
The 2nd strategy is to have a concentrated approach ‘” you can write hundreds of quick articles. For instance, summarizing on latest sports activities or politics, as they do change everyday. You can achieve maybe 1000 hits on each of your article, but multiplied by 1000 articles, that will become a very significant number and revenue for you.
Treat it like a business: Some writers are successful as they treat it as a full-time job, or even better, treat it as a business. We saw a couple which made close to $45000 a month since thy started their writing business in 2006. They treated as a corporate, and managed it the corporate way. They take on team-approach, you can’t be a writer and a marketing promoter at same time ‘”we only have 24 hours a day. So, they outsource the marketing part, they set up marketing plans each time they launch a new “article series” ‘” and allocate budget for it.
They still work on their own, still from their home, but they have 4 assistants helping them out. This has really inspired me, as this is exactly what many wish to achieve ‘” focus what you like the best; and making money while you are asleep or on vacation.
Before we started our own online writing journey, as I am a financial analyst by training, we put up some valuations and see if they are realistic. The following is our mathematical calculation:
Each article gets 200 visits a day, each visit generates on average $0.005, then this means your article can achieve $1 each day based on 200 visits, and that’s $30 per month. Which is not bad if you have 200 articles, then that becomes $6,000.
But the trick is to get 200 visits a day for each of your article ‘” in many cases, you get a spontaneous result in the first 7 days of a campaign; but gradually decline after 7 days.
So, if we work on the other way, that is based on monthly visit per article: The results is typically between $3 to $10 per article according to our research, but that is just based on organic growth without active marketing.
Based on our analysis: we have 2 methods to achieve our financial goals from online writing:
1. We can have 200 articles online, and just focus on our online marketing activities to promote these articles; and increase our “Article Yield” rate, as we call it financially.
2. Or, we have lower “Article Yield” rate but have much more articles online.
Like everything else, it is not easy to make money from article writing, you need persistent approach and set yourself a good goal. The couple who made $40,000 a month now mentioned that it took them 4 years to get where they are now, where most other writers have simply given up.
Another writer in South Carolina also mentioned she achieved $6,000 in the first year, then $20,000 the next year and just keep adding up from that. The first year was the most challenging year like any business; she overcame the issues by focusing her efforts in marketing from 2nd year; utilizing the articles already in place.
The biggest advantage in online writing business is perpetual income ‘” your articles are always online ‘” especially for those evergreen articles such as strategies. As long as someone clicks on your article, you will be compensated, even if it is 2 cents or 10 cents, they all add up.
