The heart of Internet marketing has been the website since the beginning. For Internet marketing, it is your company location on the worldwide web. I remember when I created my first website for my printer maintenance company in 2001. I negotiated with another small business owner to develop my website. Although he gave me a great flat rate price, I had created so many pages in Microsoft Word for it that he began to quickly resent the arrangement. He finally delivered the site, but then I needed changes. I finally gave up, bought Microsoft FrontPage and set out to learn it. It took me a couple months to develop that website. That was a couple months I wasn’t out selling or doing anything else to grow my brick and mortar, computer and printer service business.
When I got finished I had a presence on the Internet. It wasn’t fancy, but it was up with maybe twenty pages ‘” and no shopping cart. I saved thousands of dollars that I didn’t have at that time.
A Lot Has Changed in Ten Years
As the saying goes, we’ve come a long way, baby. Today I can create a more conventional, basic website using some of the free website development packages, like Yahoo! has for its small business customers, in days, not months. Now if you need a really sophisticated website, you will still want that programming company. Most of them use Dreamweaver, a program that takes people months to develop proficiency in.
Blogs Are Faster and Easier to Create that Conventional Websites
Personally, I prefer using blogs as they are vastly faster than creating a website, at least for me. I prefer WordPress.org’s software, which I install on my hosting company account. WordPress gives me control and ownership over my blog. Thanks to the thousands of free utilities for WordPress.org called plugins and free themes, which control the look and layout of my blog, I can have a really powerful, flexible, and customizable site. There are, of course, plugins and themes that you can buy, which offer even more capability.
Why I Like WordPress
If you too want to use WordPress, be sure that your hosting company has cPanel and Fantastico. It’s this combination that enables me to install the basic site in maybe five to fifteen minutes. Within a couple of hours I can have it customized to the look and feel I want. Give me another 30 minutes to adapt a header I already have or a couple hours to create a custom one. You might want to use a graphic designer to refine the look, though, instead of doing it yourself. Still, you can do it yourself. I personally use Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 to create graphics, like my headers to my blog pages.
Next I add the content which I want for my posts and pages. This part I would have regardless of the type of website I set up. The beauty of using a blog, especially a WordPress.org blog, is that I add static pages (ones that don’t change) or blog posts easily and quickly any time I want ‘” without a web designer or programmer.
Content Includes Text, Pictures, Audio, and Video
Additionally, thanks to sites like YouTube and plugins like Viper’s Video Quicktags, I can add video to my blog posts or pages easily and quickly. Photos are incredibly easy to upload. And I can do the same with audio files.
As a small business owner, I can get a new site up and customized in a couple hours to half a day, depending on how much I want to tweak it. I can add a post, which is the content that visitors want, within minutes of having written it. I can customize the blog posts with pictures, audio and video ‘” also within minutes ‘” provide I have it already written or recorded. So, how fast can you create your own website without a website designer? My experience says that I can create a website using WordPress.org blogging software in a fraction of the time I can a traditional website.
