Can Eating Processed Meats Put Our Health at Risk?

Recent surveys have determined that Americans are now the top consumers of processed meats such as hot dogs, bologna, sausage , ham, etc. that they have made part of their daily diets. This is not good news by any means as it is a proven fact that consumption of these meats can lead to ailments and disorders which include cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Processed meats contain very large amounts of sodium so the first risk that you are exposing yourself to is that of heart disease. When the sodium level is increased in your body it can lead to high blood pressure and can affect the ability of your blood to clot properly and this can lead to heart problems.

Sodium nitrate is the main ingredient that is used in processed meat and this is what gives the meat the red color. There have been numerous studies conducted and it has been determined that people who consume large amounts of this through consuming processed meats are more at risk for developing pancreatic cancer and leukemia as well as stomach and colon cancer along with other ailments. When you consume these foods on a consistent basis, you are increasing your odds for contracting these diseases during your lifetime.

Another downside to eating processed meats are that they can lead to obesity as they contain lots of calories and fats that are used in their processing. These foods are the ones which are smoked, salted, cured, or have had chemicals preservatives added to them to make them last longer. Examples of these include salami, bacon, bologna and hot dogs to name a few. Obesity is one of the biggest problems that Americans are facing today and these foods are a large part of the problem.

We now know that there are many ingredients that are contained in the processed meats that increase our risks for developing heart disease and diabetes, but why is this true? There have been studies conducted through research and it has been determined that the fat and cholesterol that is found in processed meats is responsible for the increased risk factors for these diseases. I know that most of us are very familiar with cholesterol levels in the body and how they can put us at risk for heart disease and other disorders.

These are some of the risks that are involved in eating processed meats in large amounts. That is not to say that you cannot eat them once a week or so, but when you start to eat them on a consistent basis, then you are putting your body and health at risk. You will be much better off to eat a well balanced diet that consists of lots of fresh fruits and vegetables that will help to keep your body energized and healthy for years to come.
