Buffalo, NY Area Garden Centers and Nurseries for 2011

While Buffalo, New York is generally known for its winters, its spring and summer cannot be matched – in my opinion anyway, and I’ve lived here my entire life. As an avid gardener, I also love the number of wonderful family-owned and operated garden centers and nurseries in the area. I routinely visit these four nurseries at least once each season, as each offers Buffalo gardeners like myself something unique for their gardens and containers.

Lavocat’s Family Greenhouse and Nursery, located at 9855 Heroy Rd. in Clarence Center, is probably my favorite nursery of them all. Lavocat’s offers a wide variety of annuals, perennials, and shrubs, many of which are unique to the nursery in the Buffalo area. Lavocat’s has been selected as a test nursery for plants that will be available elsewhere in 2012 (20 varieties in all) – if you want to see what next year’s trends will be, check out Lavocat’s!

Menne Nursery, located at 3100 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst, has been a Western New York staple for more than 60 years. Many members of their staff are New York State Certified Nursery Professionals, and Menne’s is also a full-service florist. They offer a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees for purchase, as well as top soil, mulch, garden tools, bulbs, garden ornaments, and more. In addition to landscaping services for both indoors and outdoors, Menne’s has an extensive pond and water garden shop, and offers gardening seminars and events throughout the year.

Bedfords Greenhouse, located at 6820 Cedar St. in Akron, provides plants for both wholesalers and the retail public – some of your other favorite garden centers may get their plants right here. Their specialty is hanging baskets and containers, most using unique plants from the Proven Winners line. Their signature event is the Plant for Hope Breast Cancer Fundraiser, held each May; it features exclusive hanging baskets, auctions, a cookout, and samples from a number of New York State wineries.

Adam’s Nursery has two locations in the Buffalo area: 5799 Genesee St. in Lancaster and 2121 Sheridan Dr. in Tonawanda. Part of Buffalo gardening for more than 50 years, Adam’s has most of your landscaping needs – plants, trees, shrubs, garden décor, fertilizers, mulches, and stone to name just a few items offered. One of the best things about Adam’s are their annuals weekends – starting in May, Adam’s will feature flats of different annuals for a discounted price, making it a great place to complete your garden on a budget.
