Penn Valley Park

Location: Pershing Road and Main Street

This park includes 3 acre Washington Lake, an off-leash dog park, picnic shelters and 1.88 mile asphalt trail. There are also two baseball diamonds that can be reserved by permit and a playground.

The park is home to several notable art pieces such as The Scout for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, Pioneer Mother Memorial (1927) recognizes all pioneer mothers who crossed the plains; The Hiker (1947) stands south of the Liberty Memorial Mall and represents veterans of the Spanish-American War and many more.

Deana Rose Children’s Farmstead

Location: 13800 Switzer, Overland Park, KS, 66221

Admission: Mon-Thurs FREE, $2 Fri-Sun

This venue is designed to look like a turn-of-the-century farmstead and is home to over 200 animals, vegetable and flower gardens. On this 12 acre property there is a one-room schoolhouse, fishing pond and pony rides. Activities available to enjoy are bottle feeding baby goats, milking a cow and taking a horse drawn wagon ride in the woods. The park is open daily from 9am until 5pm and closes for the season on Oct. 31st.

Overland Park Arboretum

Location: 8909 W. 179th St., Overland Park, KS 66085

Hours: Open seven days a week

April 10-Sept. 30: 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

Oct. 1-April 9: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The 300 acre Arboretum and Botanical gardens were founded to keep Overland park in the forefront of environmental and ecological issues. This area is a cultural, recreational and educational spot for the Kansas City area. This park includes botanical gardens, trails and a visitor’s center. This arboretum and botanical gardens are the perfect background for your upcoming picnic season.

Antioch Park

Location: 6501 Antioch Road, Merriam, KS

This park has recently been updated and has made enhancements to the wetland and lake that are part of this 44 acre park. This park is excellent for family outings with two fishing lakes, a walking path, tennis courts, picnic shelters, basketball courts, restrooms, playground, paved parking, and grills for your hotdog needs.

Also on the property is a great playground that has been entertaining children for generations, a rose garden and a memorial arboretum.
