Eco-friendly products are exploding on the retail scene, and I am seeing a lot of cleaning sponges that are made of earth friendly recycled materials. I love it! I want to tell you about a company that was started in 1995, called Natural Value. They offer a variety of sponges for all sorts of household cleaning jobs.
The Natural Value Walnut Scrubber Sponge is a great way to clean the home without adding to our landfills. Over the years I have thrown away countless sponges that only contributed to the pollution of our earth, but now I have an earth friendly alternative,
Natural Value Walnut Scrubber measures 4 1/2 inches by 2 7/8 inches and it is only 5/8 of an inch thick. The sponge has a natural tan color, and is made up of two different types of materials. The top of the sponge is made with organic walnut shells, and the softer sponge portion is made of cellulose.
If you have ever used an exfoliating cleanser on your skin that is made from nut shells, you know how effective they can be in removing dead skin cells. The scrubbing side of the Natural Value Walnut Scrubber is slightly abrasive but gentle, and can even be used to clean non-stick cookware and other surfaces that are more delicate or that scratch easily. It really does a pretty good job of removing burned on foods from stainless steel pots and pans!
The softer side of the Natural Value Walnut Scrubber looks more like a typical sponge, but it too is earth friendly. It is made of cellulose, a renewable resource that is an organic compound that comes from plants. This softer side of the sponge is perfect for wiping a surface clean. It is great for cleaning counters, bathtubs, tile, appliances, and a variety of other surfaces.
Will the Natural Value Walnut Scrubber last as long as other less eco-friendly cleaning sponges? That depends on how you use it, but probably not. However, it is not an expensive sponge, and is a nice alternative if you are looking for a natural cleaning option that is biodegradable.
Sponges can harbor bacteria if they are not cleaned properly, so I like to place my sponges inside my dishwasher to clean them regularly. Some say to place them in the microwave and sanitize them in this manner, but I have found they last longer and smell better if they are washed in an automatic dishwasher.
Natural Value makes a fine line of cleaning sponges, including a scrubber for the kitchen, a gentle scrubber, sponges that are compressed to take up less room in storage, and sponges made just from cellulose. Just like the Natural Value Walnut Scrubber, they are all made with 50% post-consumer recycled materials.
