Barry Manilow- Show Reviews- Las Vegas-

(Photos By Denise Truscell0)

When Barry Manilow walked on the stage at the Paris Resort, the audience stood up and applauded before he even sang a note. With flashing lights, videos of fireworks exploding, and an entrance fit for royalty, Barry was presented to the audience with PIZAZZ!!! He deserves all of the praise and fanfare for his successful “staying power” to be able to please audiences since the 70’s.

He began singing and suddenly stopped to thank the audience for giving him their love. The show moved along with our favorite songs of classic hits to those from his albums today.

Barry dazzles us with a new show created to suit its new home in the Paris Resort. Most of the evening was fresh with several exciting additions, yet I am happy he kept some of the most tender moments when Barry discussed the close relationship he had with his grandfather. It is a heartwarming true story of when Barry was a child. A video corresponded to Barry’s descriptions as his grandfather seemed to be the only one to realize Barry’s potential. His grandfather took young Barry to a store where they could make a recording for .25 cents. Barry added authenticity by playing the scratchy record and showed pictures of his grandfather and himself.

We all have songs that mean so much to us and Barry managed to pack a lot of them into his show. The musical line-up brought such favorites as “This one’s for you”, “I write the songs”, “Mandy”, “I Can’t Smile without you”, “Somewhere in the Night”, “When Will I Hold You Again”, “I Want to be somebody’s Baby”, and others.

I was happy to see that Barry’s finale was the same glorious version of “Copacabana”, a spectacular arrangement we have always enjoyed. Barry has the ability and experience to know how to build his performance to a powerful crescendo, to create such excitement the audience wants more and more. Even as we were walking out of the showroom people were singing his songs.

I have been reviewing shows in Las Vegas for 29 years and have not seen many stars with such a magnetic personality as Barry Manilow. His universal appeal has been evident throughout the years. Barry performed with the finesse of a man who has brought a lifetime of achievement to the entertainment world.

Over the past 35 years, songs like “Copacabana,” “Mandy” and “Can’t Smile Without You” have made Barry Manilow a true musical icon. He’s the top-selling, top-charting adult contemporary artist of all time, with 80 million records sold to date and 25 consecutive Top 40 hits between 1975 and 1983.

Another feature of the show was the ornate picture frames suspended to decorate the stage and become our windows to the outside world. We look at them to see the themed settings continually changing, as each seemed to be a different part of the same scene sequence. This subtle artistic approach was so much better than watching the usual life- size video screen on each side of the stage. The pictures were just a few more touches to add depth to his show.

Barry Manilow appears at the Paris Las Vegas Resort, in the Paris Theater, indefinitely. For information or tickets, call (800)-745-3000.
