If you are looking for a place to learn to dance, chances are you’ve stumbled upon an Arthur Murray Studio. This franchise business claims to be the second oldest franchise in the United States, and in the time that they have existed, they have taught numerous people how to make the dance floor come alive. As a dance-phobic male facing the uncertainty of a spotlight dance at his own wedding, I was very hesitant to commit to dance lessons, but Arthur Murray has been a sound investment and has become a new passion for my fiancée and I.
Named after the founder, the famous dancer Arthur Murray, the chain operates numerous franchises around the country. Instructors are trained in the “Arthur Murray System” of training and teaching dance. The system combines easy patterns with simple instructions, and noticeably swaps skills you learn in one dance into the next. The Waltz becomes a Rumba, which modifies a Foxtrot, and so on. Before you know it, you feel competent enough to stand on the dance floor for any number of dances. From there, classes teach advanced moves and skills, and private lessons enable you to perform spotlight performances without significant difficulty. The dances they teach are ballroom and late
While your location may be different, the quality of the instructors at the downtown Pittsburgh location is excellent. All of them have different outward approaches, but the consistency of the franchise system is so well done that they routinely swap out in group lessons with no interruption in continuity. They are all extremely friendly too, and coming in as a beginner, they work hard to make you feel competent and safe. There has never been a negative feeling in any of my sessions or lessons, and when problems occur, they correct them without making you feel like you did anything wrong. In essence, they have all the qualities of excellent teachers, and when working with adults, that is not a small thing to say.
As for the dancing, within 4 private lessons for our spotlight dance, I could move with my fiancée around the dance floor with relative ease. We are still shaky in spots, but we can practice on our own and are getting better. We’re dipping, turning, and stepping our way toward our wedding, and we’re having a lot of fun with that. With the end of our wedding package on the horizon, we happily added a continuing contract, since both of us were having so much fun and learning a lot. For about $130 a month, we are able to attend group lessons and practice sessions and meet for a refresher with our private instructor as well. It may not be the cheapest thing, but it gives us weekly dates and lets us have fun outside the house while learning something. Plus, we’ll be that much better for the wedding. It is a no-brainer.
I highly recommend Arthur Murray Dance studios. The lessons are awesome, the instructors are excellent, and women love a man who can dance. Treat yourself and/or your special someone to some dancing lessons, and before you know it, you will be looking forward to the dance floor at the next celebration you are attending too!
