Art Journaling Mixed Media Techniques Review: The Resist Method

Art journaling is about trying new techniques and experimenting with art using different tools. It has no rules except to say that there are no wrong answers in art journaling. Discovering new techniques can be exciting. Deciding how to use what you’ve learned can be thrilling as you pick and choose how you want to personalize it specific to your artwork.

The resist method is one technique that can be used in a variety of ways. It’s one of those techniques that make people ask “how did they do that?” With just a few steps, you can now learn how to do the resist method with success every time.

There are a couple of ways to use the resist method. The first way is to buy art masking fluid from your local craft store. It should be located in the painting supplies section next to the gesso and other oils. It comes in a glass bottle and a little goes a long way.

Depending on what kind of background you want to do, there are a couple of ways to go about it. For instance, you can take a stamp and using a brush, paint a thin coat of the art masking fluid over the stamp. Then stamp it onto your page. Your page can be blank or have a layer of color already dried.

You can also use just a paint brush and apply the art masking fluid sporadically on the page. Another method is to use a writing utensil and dip it in the art masking fluid, then write on the background page.

Regardless of which technique you try, make sure that you allow the art masking fluid to dry completely. You do not want it to come off prematurely. Once dry, you can paint over the design, adding different colors. When you have the background page how you want it, simply peel off the dry art masking fluid. In some cases you may not have to peel it off. You can see the effects instantly as the paint does not stay on the areas you have applied the masking fluid.

Another way to successfully perform the resist method is to use a white crayon. Just like you do at Easter, write on your background page in the areas you want the paint to resist with a white crayon. The wax will resist the paint. They also make clear pens with this similar feature so you can write secret messages if you wish. Try the Glaze pens for that because it comes with a clear pen for that very use.

From the resist method can come all kinds of interesting effects. Swirls and dots can be highlighted by the paint and additional layers you add. It’s really up to you how you want to use it but I recommend that you give it a try.
