I was not at all surprised when the announcement came out that Arnold Schwarzenegger and wife, Maria Shriver, had separated after twenty-five years of marital bliss and apparently some well-concealed marital discord.
On the heels of their separation announcement, Schwarzenegger has confessed that he’s fathered a lovechild with a former member of their household staff. This woman, who was reportedly married at the time of the affair and initially said the child was her husband’s, had a child with Schwarzenegger and that child is now about ten years old. This entire thing is a mess, but now the mess has gone public.
I wonder why, if Schwarzenegger craved women on the side, he didn’t pull an Elliot Spitzer and just pay for the best in the business. I’m not condoning this, but I’m just saying, it’s not like he couldn’t afford it. If that’s what he so chose to do, he could have secretly hired a beautiful, professional lover discreetly and no one would have been none the wiser, but he decided to pull a Robin Williams and a Jude Law and sex up the hired help. Wrong is wrong, but stupid is stupid.
Perhaps wives of powerful men with wandering eyes and a penchant for womanizing should learn to hire less comely help. I’d hire female staff that looked like female versions of The Elephant Man and surely would not have lookers running around my house and my husband. Honestly, I’d try to avoid such a dilemma, but hiring attractive young women to work in your home, when you have any inclination your husband’s sneaky, is asking for it — kinda sorta. If a man is going to cheat, he’s going to cheat anyway, but having the prey in close proximity, is like parading a steak in front of a hungry lion and thinking he’s not going to eat it.
Rumors had been surfacing for years that Schwarzenegger was a bit of a womanizer and felt a constant need to reach out and touch someone whenever he felt like it. Several women have reported over the years that he is a bit of a groper and a fondler and can be very forward with the ladies, but no one has really pushed the issue or made a media event or legal battle out of it and even if they did, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has the power to squash and squelch such things. Maybe they were really only rumors, but he’s always seemed to give off a vibe that he was larger than life, could do whatever and whomever he wanted and that the world was his playground. It’s no secret that he’s financially loaded and he boldly flaunts his money.
Schwarzenegger never hid his joy at being rich or famous and in Maria Shriver he found the perfect counterpart and trophy wife; intelligent and a Kennedy for God’s sake! Some say she is beautiful with regal bone structure, but having seen pictures of her without make-up … uh … never mind. I was raised that if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything.
Perhaps Schwarzenegger, who harbored political aspirations, saw Schiver as a practical component in his life and a means to an end, being that she was a Kennedy. She probably saw him as a man worthy of a Kennedy woman. He was famous, powerful, strong-jawed, chiseled, personable, rich and his muscles had muscles. Hey, what’s not to like?
It’s no secret that men of power and fortune often feel that it’s their inherent right to have side women, do whatever they want and often believe that they are above the law. It’s also no secret that some women will endure this in exchange for the spoils that a man of fame and fortune can provide for them and if the man just happens to be attractive then even better. If a woman chooses lifestyle over substance, then she’d better be strong enough to endure the inevitable hurt that can often arise from that choice.
Perhaps beyond their match-made-in-Heaven union, Schwarzenegger and Shriver did love each other (and still might) and together created an empire and four children. Now, as the facade that shrouded their empire crumbles, they are both going to have to endure the aftermath, both of his infidelity and her tolerance, which was most likely the case. She is an extremely intelligent woman, who is worldly, so I would assume she was not blind and knew full well what kind of man she married. Or perhaps, she had a super-ego and had it stuck in her craw that she was so spectacular that her man would never cheat on her. Does this make what he did, right? No, not at all.
Maria Shriver stood by her man during womanizing accusations previously and also while he enjoyed success as the Governor of California, but now it’s clear that the time has come for them to both move on in their lives separately and they will hopefully, with minimal damage to all of the children involved.
