Are you a good communicator? You should be able to provide clear instructions and messages to your team, but also, you must be a good listener. You must be someone your team can count on that will listen to their concerns, and provide them with good direction and feedback. You must also be the liaison between upper management and your team.
Are you self-motivated? True leaders know that motivation lies within each person and not on external factors. If you are not motivated, it will show and you can’t expect your team to be motivated. Remember they will do what you do. If your motivation comes from taking pride in your job, that is an excellent example to set.
How well do you know your team? You should be well aware of the strenghts and weaknesses of each individual within the team, and the team as a whole. That way you will be able to put those strenghts to the benefit of the group and provide the required support to overcome those weaknesses. With this information, you will know how to delegate the right tasks to the right people.
Are you a good strategist? The same way your favorite sports team coach designs a plan to play against the opposite team and win the game. You should be able to create a structured plan that will serve you as a guide to reach your desired goals. With a clear plan you will know what needs to be done, how, when, where, and by whom.
Being an effective manager requires practice and experience. It is a continuous learning process. Start working with yourself, and that way, you will be in a better position to work with your team.
