I’m not trying to get on a soapbox here, but I don’t think that people have been noticing that Minorities are only a percentage of our viewing pleasure. Sure, it’s been going on a long time, but why? Haven’t the Studio Heads learned by now that if you want more people watching your Networks you have to add “variety” to the Roster?
Recently, I was looking for some Acting work in the Midwest and, basically, it’s a wasteland out here. I stumbled across some guys that are putting together a Pilot for TV and was calling it “The Average Guys”. With the profanity in it, I’m thinking they are going for Cable TV. Anyway, I started reading the script and, well, it was so boring.
It was about a group of five guys around their late 20s and early 30s playing cards, hanging out, and you get to see a glimmer of their individual lives. It was predictable, and just an average “formula.” I wanted to audition for an “all types” character, but as I read the dialogue, he was white, too.
This would be like any other script that is lame, but something tells me that they will get it produced and on the air in no time. Why? Because it’s the Hollywood view of the average guys and that’s what’s “in” right now. Sorry, but I dosed off while reading it. This, like other shows and movies, has too much of a “Friends” tone to them.
The popular shows that are out there are the ones that are formulated or using typical characters like “the womanizer” or “the neurotic” or “I’m the only one with sense” character. Even when they do add a minority, they don’t know how to write for them. I like “How I Met Your Mother”, but the first black guy they had on was Wayne Brady and he was a gay character.
What’s worse is when you see the same black people in movies and television as if there are no others auditioning in the U.S. Trust me, they are. I know the Execs want “bankable” actors, but I see new non-Minority actors & actresses in shows and movies ALL THE TIME! Are they “bankable”?
I would like to have some possible solutions to this problem. I mean, how do we get Hollywood to be more diverse? Diversity is a major part of our society. It makes things more interesting, fun, and cool. Entertainment right now is like “Twilight“, a whole lot of “regular” people and 1 black dude (who gets killed).
One minority per movie or TV show is not enough. We’re not hard to right for, we’re people. Just look at a show like “Outsourced”. It stays indigenous to the Indian culture and is hilarious. Why? They have Indian people as Writers! Ethnic Writers are not hard to find. Heck, if I wanted to I could make “The Average Guys” the best thing on Cable TV.
