Maricopa County citizens have awakened to yet another scandal coming from within the Sheriff’s office. The toll has been severe for law enforcement in this county because of poor management practices, unethical conduct and corruptive practices never challenged before at such a tenacious pace as today. The removal of Andrew Thomas’s misguided advice as our county attorney has been impacted in a most positive manner by the clean and ethical conduct of Bill Montgomery and his staff. I applaud them and extend much kudos to them for standing up against the Sheriff and his shenanigans that are both unlawful and unethical in content and context.
I also applaud another law enforcement officer willing to ride the heat for standing up for justice and ethical conduct. Mike Stauffer, a police lieutenant from Scottsdale has released his own informational points of view of the latest MCSO scandal that illustrates the dire need to remove Joe Arpaio from office immediately. Read his latest release and see how the county can’t afford too much more financial, criminal and corrupted mismanagement from the current sheriff and some of his staff. Keep in mind that these are not the actions of the entire staff of the MCSO employees but only represents those who chose to bring crime into their lives by violating the trusts of the people and the badge they wore. There are still many good men and women who do great work and deserve better leadership in these tremulous times we are experiencing.
Press Release 5/25/2011 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE by Mike Stauffer for Maricopa County Sheriff on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 7:53am
Official Statement on Sheriff Arpaio’s mishandling of MCSO deputies involved in human and drug smuggling.
It should be clear by now, Sheriff Arpaio’s negligence and extreme mismanagement of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has yielded yet another scandal. While the sheriff has repeatedly told us that he is in charge and he alone is keeping crime at bay, his corrupt leadership has emboldened and encouraged criminal activity at all levels of MCSO. It is clear that Sheriff Arpaio has no intention to clean up the corrupt environment that he has fostered. We should no longer allow Sheriff Arpaio to conduct his cover-ups and blame games and hold him accountable.
In this latest incident, Sheriff Arpaio admitted that he has known about the human and illicit drug smuggling of these employees for at least one year, but failed to do anything about it until recently. In addition, the sheriff casually admitted that there are a number of other employees under suspicion for these same offenses that are still on the job. The highest standards of American law enforcement ethics require employees under this kind of suspicion to be placed on leave immediately, while a comprehensive and timely investigation is conducted. Why is there a delay in the immediate removal of these criminals from the ranks of MCSO? Furthermore, I am deeply concerned that Sheriff Arpaio’s failed track record of inaction with regards to corruption in his office is, now more than ever, compromising the public’s safety.
For the good of the people of Maricopa County and the dignity of Arizona law enforcement, it is now time for Sheriff Arpaio to accept full responsibility for his failures and step down.
Thank you and I look forward to serving as your next Sheriff.
Police Lt. Mike Stauffer
Candidate for Maricopa County Sheriff – 2012
