An Easy to Make Pet Bed

Anyone who has a pet, especially a dog or cat, knows that a pet is a humans’ best friend. The pet trusts us to meet their every need and we know that we can count on them to always be there anxiously waiting for us when we arrive home after a long day. We also know how anxious we can be after being away from home or just after a long day’s work to get home to our bed, Our bed can be our own little sanctuary of peace from the stress of the day. Do we realize that our pets appreciate their beds as much as we do. Store bought beds can be extremely nice, but very expensive. Here is a low cost alternative to that fancy bed from the pet store.

There are actually two choices here to choose from. The first being that you use a large body pillow covering and stuff it with fiberfill. Once you get the amount of stuffing that you want in it, then just sew up the open end of it and you will have a comfortable bed that has been made with love for your pet. These are nice as they are washable and can be dried in the dryer.

Another way is to make your pet a bed out of a piece of fleece and some fiberfill. For this, you will need 7/8 yard of fleece ( in whatever color you think that your pet will like) and 20 ounces of fiberfill. This will require a sewing machine or quite a bit of hand sewing. You will basically be making a pillow case and stuffing it with the fiberfill to become the pet’s new bed.

Begin by placing the right sides of the fleece together and stitching along the edge of these. Leave a 3/4 inch seam allowance. Once finished, turn at the corner and sew along the edge.

Trim the corners and turn right side out. Fill the completed case with fiberfill, making sure to stuff the corners completely. Once as full as you prefer, start at the seam and sew closed. Shake the bed good when you are finished to even out the fiberfill.

The nice thing about a pet bed like this is that it is completely washable and can be dried in the dryer. Wash fleece in cool water and make sure the bed is dried on low heat. The low heat will keep it from shrinking any. Your pet will love the new bed and you can add an applique to the top of it if you prefer to decorate the bed some. Most pets won’t care if it is decorated as long as it is something warm and comfortable for them to snuggle up in.

Either one of these ideas can easily be done in a couple of hours. This project is easy enough that even a beginner should be able to make one whether they have any real sewing knowledge or not.
