The Season 10 American Idol winner had to sweat things out on the final results show. However, Scotty McCreery found a way to hold on despite one last challenge from Lauren Alaina. Over 122 million fans voted for the latest Idol in a showdown that had the youngest final pairing in the show’s history. Yet Lauren and Scotty were poised beyond their years, although only one could be the big winner.
No one knew just what to expect from the final results, as Scotty seemed to be the favorite, but Lauren had a big opening to rally back. Despite reports that she had a shot voice before Tuesday’s show, Lauren still performed and had a chance to steal momentum at the last minute.
Such a twist has become common in an Idol finale, as underdogs like Kris Allen and Lee DeWyze have made comebacks over Adam Lambert and Crystal Bowersox. So, since Lauren was the underdog, she actually appeared to be in good shape.
But unlike past Season 10 favorites Casey Abrams, Pia Toscano and James Durbin, Scotty held off any upset bids. He was the last frontrunner standing, and, as such, joins an elite group of winners in the show’s decade-long history.
Time will tell how he compares to the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, Allen and DeWyze. However, past history suggests that Lauren will be just fine in spite of losing, if Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry are an indication.
But the season’s other runners-up could always make it bigger for all anyone knows. Abrams, Toscano, Durbin, Haley Reinhart and the rest of the top 13 got one last showcase in the finale; Reinhart sang with Tony Bennett and the top six men paid tribute to Tom Jones. For Reinhart, this has been a particularly madcap week, as TMZ alleged that she was ready to fill in for Lauren Tuesday if her voice didn’t improve.
Yet for all the rumors Tuesday and all the buildup and tension on Wednesday, the grand finale belonged to new American Idol Scotty. The champion rode to the top with a country sound and voice, which worked well for Underwood during and after her win years ago.
As a result, he will aim to match mega star winners like Underwood in his newfound career. As for the show itself, it will go on hiatus while The Voice and Simon Cowell’s The X-Factor fill the Idol gap until Season 11 begins in early 2012.
