‘American Idol’ Top 5 Power Rankings: Lauren Alaina Might Not Be ‘The One’ After All

“American Idol” Season 10 is down to its last four contestants and it is looking more and more as if it just might be a sing-off between frontrunners James Durbin and Scotty McCreery in the finale. However, smokey-voiced Haley Reinhart has been making a case for why she should be the next “American Idol” for the past couple of weeks as well, even going so far as to earn a standing ovation for her rendition of The Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” during her Top 5 performances. And Lauren Alaina? It seems as if the Georgia teen that judge Steven Tyler labeled “The One” after her Nashville audition just might be left behind after this week, because most power rankings lists have her positioned last among the four finalists — and the odds are against her as well.

A quick glance at three “American Idol” power rankings lists — TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly, and Idolator — tells the story. As mentor Jimmy Iovine stated on the Top 5 results show, a lack of confidence can and will be picked up by the audience and Lauren’s, he said, was evident, especially since she wouldn’t even take on the high note in “Unchained Melody.” He also predicted that she would land in the Bottom 2 that evening — and his prediction came to pass. The power rankings reflect that lack of confidence in Lauren as well. All three have her positioned in the No. 4 slot.

Two of them have the “consistent” James Durbin on top, while the Entertainment Weekly, power list places Scotty McCreery in the top spot. Apparently seeing something in Haley Reinhart’s recent surge, EW also places the 20-year-old in second. Reinhart is third in the other two polls.

For Lauren Alaina to bounce back, she has to hope that at least one of her fellow finalists does poorly with song selection and performance in the Top 4 performance round. The theme for the week is the “Songbook of Lieber & Stoller,” songwriters who are in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for penning such notable numbers as “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Stand By Me,” “Yakety-Yak,” “On Broadway,” “Love Potion #9,” “Leader of the Pack,” and “Stuck In The Middle With You.” She might also get some helpful pointers from this week’s mentor as well, Lady Gaga.

But even the odds are against her. At Bodog.com, the professional oddsmakers place her at 9/2 odds of winning “American Idol,” which is just back of Haley Reinhart’s 7/2 odds. James Durbin and Scotty McCreery, as might be expected, tie at most likely to win with 3/2 odds.

But being placed at the bottom of power rankings oddsmakers’ lists does not an elimination make. That has to come at the hands of the “American Idol” voters. Fans will find out if Lauren survived on Thursday, May 12, on the results episode.
