‘American Idol’ Amped Up This Week with Songs from the Elton John Collection

Tonight the remaining eleven finalists performed songs by Elton John. Last week, Casey Abrams was saved from elimination when the judges used the one time save on him. That means two people will go home this week.

Scotty McCreery
He was up first singing Elton John’s, Country Comfort. He’s a wonderful country singer and a big part of me really wants him to win. I do have a couple of other favorites though. He has a way of making a song his own and although he only sings country – he doesn’t need to learn to sing any other genre. He isn’t a one trick pony at all. He already knows what type of singer he wants to be. The judges were impressed and told him to stay grounded and that he was always right now. Randy Jackson told him he felt like he was at his concert because he’s so in the zone. Scotty is only 17-years-old and his deep voice is amazing and I hope to see him come out of this with an album, even if he doesn’t win. (I give Scotty 5 out of 5 stars.)

Naima Adedapo
She chose I’m Still Standing by Elton John and she turned it in to a reggae song. I have to admit she put too much of a twist on it for my liking. She also badly needs a stylist because every week she looks terrible. I am not referring to her looks but her method of dressing is too crazy. Dressing nice is an important ingredient in being the total package, just as much as singing well is. I love her voice, however, her bad songs choices and poor wardrobe choices could largely affect her staying in the competition. She needs to be more relatable if she wants to get the votes. I want her to stay in the competition I really do that’s why I think of these things because I am a fan. (My rating for her is 2 out of 5 stars.)

Paul McDonald
He performed Rocket Man by Elton John while playing the guitar. He’s so different and unusual yet sings soft and he’s quirky and I love that. My complaint is that he made the song too soft and mellow. At the same time his voice was right on. I hope fans keep him on. (I give him 3 our of 5 stars due to him making an Elton John song too soft.)

Pia Toscano
She sang Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me from Elton John’s hit collection. She already has one of the best voices in the group but it’s also about song choice and the spin that they put on it. Randy asked her to not do a ballad this week and she did anyways. She hits the high notes and sang it well but she never moves just stands there and it gets boring. Perhaps that is why Randy asked her to not sing a ballad. Steven Tyler said Randy was wrong about singing ballads. (I give her 4 out 5 stars.)

Stefano Langone
He chose Tiny Dancer to sing. I love that song and so do millions of fans. Jimmy Iovine said he thought Stefano was going to have problems singing the song because parts of the song were specifically written for Elton John’s voice. However, Iovine gave Stefano a lot of tips in his performance that helped him step it up from previous performances. He did a good job and was better than usual, definite improvement. (I would give him 3 out of 5 stars.)

Lauren Alaina
She sang Elton’s Candle in the Wind with conviction and passion. Her voice was right on and in parts very Reba McEntire and she sounded magnificent. Randy called it one of her best performances and said she could do anything. Steven Tyler called it perfect. (She gets 5 out of 5 for being exceptional and Reba-like.)

James Durbin
He chose Saturday’s Alright For Fighting which kept him singing rock anthems which he’s very good at. He reminds me of Queen and he’s not afraid to work the stage, or stand on top of a flaming piano. He hits those high notes like Adam Lambert. Very impressive. (4 out of 5 stars.)

Thia Megia
She sang Daniel with compassion. Her voice is awesome and she made it extra tender. My only wish for her is that she would sing more fun songs. Her performances are getting too deep, sad, and slow for my liking. An up tempo song would be great about now. She is too serious on stage every single week. Just my opinion. She needs fun and exciting songs. (4 out of 5 stars.)

Casey Abrams
He chose Your Song from the Elton John collection for tonight. His voice is perfect for that song. He can hit the high notes and the low notes and he takes chances. He’s always entertaining to watch. Every single time. Randy called it just right and said that saving him last week was the best choice they had made. Steven Tyler said he sings different every time and that is what a true artist is. Jennifer Lopez said she didn’t lose any sleep over saving him. People saw what happened last week when he almost went home. So if you want to keep him in the competition be sure to vote tonight. (I give him 5 out of 5 stars.)

Jacob Lusk
He sang What Do I Got To Do To Make You Love Me. The judges liked it and showered him with compliments. Randy told him to pick one shining spot, like Pia. (I give him 3 out of 5 stars.)

Haley Reinhart
He performed Bennie and The Jets while sitting on top of a piano. She has a great singing tone and an old but nice sound to her voice. I personally like her voice better when she doesn’t growl during the song because when she hits the high notes she sounds great. Jennifer Lopez loved it and called it a great way to end the show. Randy Jackson called it the best performance of the night. She sings like Maegan Corkrey from a previous season of ‘AI” and she didn’t win. (I give her 4 out of 5 stars.)
