American Idol 2011 Results Finally Land on Top 9

The American Idol 2011 results had been quite chaotic lately. Last week, the results sent out the most famous 2011 contestant, but Casey Abrams managed to get saved by the judges. However, this meant that last night’s show had to send two singers out to make up for the save. As such, the final 11 were truly working without a safety net, as Steven, J. Lo or Randy could not save them from the country’s judgment now.

Warning: Spoilers follow

The top 11 returned together for the second and last time to perform the music of Elton John. It has been a rather notable last few days for John, as he got the Idol treatment on the same week he is hosting Saturday Night Live. But the contestants really needed to do him justice on Wednesday, or they would be in for a more permanent “Holiday” from the show.

Yet on last night’s results show, the singers broadened their playlists with numbers like “I Told You So,” “Solid” and “Teenage Dream” which they performed in duets and small groups. Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino was the latest past contestant to come back, while Rio voice artists Jamie Foxx and filled out the role of guest stars who had a movie to plug.

But eventually, it was time to get down to actual business – and more of it than usual. The dramatic save of Casey Abrams last week set the bar for American Idol this season. Therefore, the 2011 edition of the double elimination show would either raise it higher or prove more anticlimactic by comparison.

Since there was virtually no way that Abrams would be in danger again this time, the bottom three were made up of Paul McDonald, Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo. In the end, America chose to save McDonald – but thanks to Abrams’ save, both Megia and Adedapo had to go, whereas one of them would have stayed alive in any other week.

Although it took some extra time, Idol is now down to the top 9 at last. The elimination of Thia and Naima did little to alter the race, since they were likely destined to go soon anyway. At the least, it made less of an impact than the departure of Abrams would have.

Now that American Idol has crossed off its double elimination results, the show may be ready to settle down a bit. Abrams, McDonald, Pia Toscano, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin, Stefano Langone, Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery have a little more wiggle room next Thursday, since one of them can survive the bottom two. But of course, no one can survive being in the bottom one anymore this season.
