Allergen-Free Easter Candy

Gourmet Jelly Beans, a traditional holiday treat, has a long and interesting history that is deeply woven into American culture.

According to the University Chronicle, the earliest known appearance of the Jelly Bean goes back to the American Civil War. William Schraft of Boston promoted sending jelly beans to soldiers, presumably because they could be transported and preserved better than chocolate. In the early 1900’s, Jelly Beans became popular in the glass jars of “penny candy” in general stores, where they were sold by weight rather than by piece.

Gimbal’s Fine Candies jumped on the jelly bean trend from day one and are proud to be the only line of Gourmet Jelly Beans that are free of all the Major 8 Food Allergens. According to the Centers for Disease Control, upwards of 8% of American children and 2% of adults are afflicted with food allergies. For reasons not fully understood, the prevalence of food allergies seems to be increasing. Approximately 90% of food allergies are caused by the so-called “Big 8 Allergens.” These eight foods are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy and gluten. Gimbal’s does not allow “Big 8 Allergens” in any of their confections andtheir facilities are completely free of these foods, eliminating the risk of cross-contamination on production or packaging equipment.

“Gourmet Jelly Beans are one of our best selling candies,” said Karin Vollrath, sales and marketing manager. “One of the things we’re most proud of is that we offer 41 delicious flavors that can be safely enjoyed by many people who suffer from food allergies. Every week we receive calls from appreciative customers telling us how happy they were to share our Gourmet Jelly Beans at school events and other gatherings with participants that might otherwise not be able to join in the festivities. Particularly for children who suffer from food allergies, this is a huge deal.”

Gimbal’s also produces Cherry Lovers® Candies, Honey Lovers® Candies, All Natural Licorice Scotties® and chewy cinnamon LavaBalls®. Through the years, Gimbal’s Fine Candies, founded by Alexander Gimbal in 1898, has created a loyal following for their exquisite Gourmet Jelly Beans.
