Alka-Seltzer has been around since 1931 and is a product of the Bayer Corporation. It has been used for many years as an antacid to aid the affects of acid indigestion. It also is a great little pain relief medicine that can make upset stomachs, heartburn, headaches and body aches vanish. Besides the mixture of ingredients that react with the body is promoted by the effervescent bubbles that escape when submerged in water. These tablets have helped many with all these symptoms. That is not all that they can do. Two or more Alka-Seltzer tablets can do some amazing things around the house. It is a bit scary that something that is mild enough to swallow to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn for the most part can also be used to clean with.
Suppose you were given a bouquet of flowers. They are placed in a vase filled with water. In many cases the vase is forgotten until those fresh cut flowers seem to wilt away. The flowers are thrown out or added to the compost heap then the water spilled down the drain. Now there is a film near the bottom of the vase. Your hand is too small to get down that far and that bottle brush is no longer part of the kitchen since the kids grew up. Take one or two Alka-Seltzer tablets and drop them into the vase. Fill it with water and allow them to fizz away. Once they stop, put your hand over the top and shake it back and forth. The stain will come out and then the vase can be washed out with hot soapy water and sparkle until the next bouquet arrives.
Alka-Seltzer not only has that effervescent action going on but they also contain citric acid. This is a key ingredient that will help clean a toilet in a pinch when that bottle of bowl cleaner was put back under the sink empty. This does happen; no one wants to be the one to say it is empty because it would be easy to get a new one on the next shopping trip. No, we put it back empty and then company comes and you’re stuck. Drop two tablets in the bowl and let them effervesce. Grab the brush and do your thing. The bowl will be clean and the room won’t smell like you just cleaned it minutes before your guests arrive.
Not all thermos bottles are made of stainless steel. Some do still have a plastic lining. Especially those cute lunch boxes brought for young children. With all the fruit juices, teas, coffees and cocoa drinks that are placed in a thermos washing alone sometimes is not enough. Some of these foods will leave a residue if not cleaned immediately after emptying them. Now who is going to do that besides Mom? No one! And the proof is in the thermos; at the bottom and along the sides too. Also, depending upon the size of the thermos drop in one or two tablets along with water and let the reaction begin. The bubbles will attack the stain. Then wash as usual, let it dry and it will be ready for the next filling.
Drains can get clogged for any number of reasons. It can be the kitchen sink, the bathroom sink or a tub or shower drain. Using a harsh chemical like Drano can be harmful to have if some children are home and can reach for the bottle when you’re not looking. Plus, it smells pungent too. Bleach is another option and can smell good and bad depending on who is around when it is poured down the drain. But since that was designed more for whitening clothes and disinfecting items why not save it for those purposes. Just take 3 Alka-Seltzer tablets and drop them in the drain. Pour a cup of white vinegar down after them. Wait about ten minutes and run the hot water. The drain clog will release itself and no harsh fumes will emit from the drain into the room.
These are a few ideas, tips or suggestions as you may to use Alka-Seltzer tablets that you may have in the medicine cabinet or forgotten on one of the linen closet shelves. We are not saying to go out and purchase these tablets just for these reasons. Well you can if you really wanted to. It may be that those tablets have been held onto so long that they are no longer safe for consumption. Instead of tossing them straight out to the trash can use these suggestions to further their use when heartburn is no longer the issue.
