British director Sir Alfred Hitchcock was born in London in 1899 (Mystery Net) and went on to become one of the most iconic horror directors in the film industry with his many successful movies and classic show Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Although born British, Alfred Hitchcock did later receive American citizenship while retaining his British rights and made many of his movies in America (U.S History).
Alfred Hitcock attended the University of London and St. Ignatius College before getting into the film industry in 1922 and working various artistic, writing and assistant positions (Biography). Hitchcock started his directing career in 1922 with the movie Number 13, which kicked off a 54-year directing career that spawned many classic films including the horror masterpieces Psycho and The Birds (IMDB). His most well known film Psycho was highly controversial upon its release, especially for its well known shower scene, but has gone on to be seen as a very groundbreaking work in the horror film genre.
In addition to his successful film career, Sir Alfred Hitchcock also hosted Alfred Hitchcock Hour, which featured opening and closing statements by Hitchcock and often revolved around horror themes or criminal activities. Alfred Hitchcock was also the host of an earlier and similarly formatted show called Alfred Hitchcock Presents, but the stories were usually shorter than the later show and were occasionally directed by Hitchcock himself (IMDB Alfred Hitchcock Presents). In Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Alfred Hitchcock Hour, the shows began with an opening tune and a series of lines designed by Alfred Hitchcock to resemble his own silhouette.
Sir Alfred Hitchcock died in April 1980 at the age of 80 as the result of heart and liver conditions (Alfred Hitchcock TV). Hitchcock remained married to Alma Reville from 1926 until his death in 1980, and they had one daughter named Patricia Hitchcock (IMDB Biography). Alfred Hitchcock was given many awards throughout his career, but some of his most prestigious were his lifetime time achievement award by the American Film institute in 1979 and being granted knighthood in the United Kingdom (Movie Guide Biography).
