Al Pacino recently appeared at the Tony Awards in New York with his pretty Argentinian girlfriend Lucila Sola at his side. Lucila is 31-years-old. The Godfather star is 71.
Kelsey Grammer turned out to the same event with new wife, air hostess Kayte Walsh, on his arm. The Frasier star is 56. Young Brit, Kayte, is just 30.
Meanwhile Ronnie Wood, latecomer to the Rolling Stones, was strolling around in London with Brazilian girlfriend, Ana Araujo. Ana is still in her 20s. Boyfriend Ronnie is 64.
Mel Gibson ran away from home to pursue his affair with Russian beauty Oksana Grigorieva who at 41 is 15 years younger than Mel, 56.
More dramatic was the age gap between Playboy millionaire, Hugh Hefner, and his ex bride-to-be, ‘glamour model’ Crystal Harris.
Charlie Sheen, meanwhile, appears to have hired young girls to be his goddesses and personal assistants.
Age gap relationships almost always rest on the men’s money and the girls’ youth. Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were genuinely in love and well-matched despite their age gap but most age gap relationships are transparently tawdry exchanges of sex and money.
One wonders, looking at photos of these lovers in “May December” relationships, how they manage not to appear embarrassed. Can the men really be sufficiently deluded to imagine their young girlfriends find them sexy and fascinating? Don’t they realise that their pretty young girlfriends/mistresses match their midlife crises – often late midlife crises – rather obviously?
Ron Wood and girlfriend Ana represent one of the most extreme age gap relationships. Ana is young and beautiful and Ron looks like a character from The Munsters. He really does look like one of the living dead in a zombie movie. He may be kind and considerate to Ana, but a grandfather may be kind and considerate too. That’s no reason to have a sexual relationship with him.
It’s hard to believe that the young women in these relationships have any genuine physical interest in their sugar daddies – which means they must submit rather unhappily to the attentions of their old boyfriends. Is reflected fame, and money, really worth ditching your self-respect for? Apparently, yes. Ana Arauja looked really embarrassed recently when photographed with wrinkly Ron but she goes on dating him. Crystal Harris, before ditching Hugh Hefner for Jordan McGraw (a boyfriend of her own age) had the brass neck to tweet on Twitter that she loved Hef and would have “the most romantic wedding ever”.
As for the older men – they tend to grin broadly when out with their pretty young girlfriends. (Kelsey Grammer is the biggest grinner of the lot.) The message seems to be that they feel other men must be jealous of them. Well, of course lots of men would love to have a pretty young girlfriend. But…would they also love to know she was only after one thing and it was money?
Perhaps men like Hefner and Ron Wood really delude themselves into thinking that their girlfriends love them? Or maybe they accept that the deal is “your body – my money”. Perhaps that just doesn’t bother them?
There’s something rather pathological though about old men dating young girls. Al Pacino, dating 31-year-old Lucila, is still dating women of the same age he was dating 40 years ago. It’s as if he’s stuck in the past or trying to deny his age. Biologically, of course, these relationships are valid in that the men can still impregnate the women. Nature is clearly relaxed about old men reproducing with young women! But there’s a real eeeewwww factor about these age gap relationships. One of my neighbours ran off with a young Argentinian girl in 2007. She’s 30 years his junior. They may, apparently, have a baby together. If they do, his grandchildren may be in the position where their uncle or aunt is younger than they are and their grandfather’s girlfriend – their step-grandmother – is younger than their mother.
Relationships with big age gaps are all pretty screwy and can lead to some very odd family relationships among siblings and half-siblings and between the generations. At least Crystal and Hugh didn’t get round to having babies. Perhaps she wasn’t paid enough!
