For me, summer just wouldn’t be the same without taking in a baseball game or two. And for those on a budget, taking the family to a San Diego Padres game can be a great and affordable family outing. Unlike many other types of sporting events, professional baseball parks tend to cater to families. The Padres are no exception, and offer lots of exciting options for both parent and child. So bring a blanket, pack a picnic and head out to Petco Park!
Getting There – Petco Park is conveniently located in downtown San Diego, making public transportation a great option. If you’re attending on Saturday or Sunday, two children (12 and under) can ride the trolley free with each paid adult 18 and over. Day passes for adults are only $5, so this option can relieve you from the stress of driving in game traffic, as well as take it easy on your wallet. If you drive, parking will cost you between $5 and $15, depending on how close you are to the park. For more information on public transportation in San Diego, click here.
Park Pass – The folks at Petco Park encourage families by offering their “Park Pass” for just $5 per person. This seating is in the grassy area below the scoreboard. Here, you can spread out your blanket and enjoy the game with the entire family without having to take out a second mortgage. You may bring your own food and water to this area, although some restrictions apply. Click here to check out the rules before packing your picnic. All other park amenities are still available to those purchasing Park Passes .
Friday Night Fireworks – After select Friday night home games, the park puts on a fantastic fireworks display, and the view is spectacular. What better way to spend an evening with the family? This year’s fireworks dates are: June 24, July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 2 and Sept. 23.
Freebies – As a kid, half the fun of going to a baseball game was getting the free bat or cap or whatever was being given away that day. The Padres keep this tradition strong, offering giveaways to the first 25,000 in attendance on Saturdays (like a PCL Padres vintage cap on June 11). On Sundays, they offer freebies to the first 8,000 kids aged 14 and under (like a Padres gumball machine on Sept. 4). Click here for a complete listing of Petco Park freebies.
